New New York City wieder aufgetaut.

[...] Six years after getting axed by Fox, Futurama is being resurrected on Comedy Central.
A spokesperson for 20th Century Fox Television confirms that the cable net has ordered 26 new episodes of Matt Groening and David X. Cohen's late, great animated series to air beginning in 2010. The studio cites Futurama's "blockbuster" performance on DVD and in reruns on Comedy Central as the reason for its rebirth.
Hmmm... sound familiar?
"When we brought back Family Guy several years ago, everyone said that it was a once in a lifetime thing -- that canceled series stay canceled and cannot be revived," 20th Century Fox TV Chairmen Gary Newman and Dana Walden said in a joint statement. "But Futurama was another series that fans simply demanded we bring back, and we couldn’t have been happier when Matt and David agreed that there were many more stories yet to tell."
Adds Groening: "We’re thrilled Futurama is coming back. We now have only 25,766 episodes to make before we catch up with Bender and Fry in the year 3000." [...]

[27.02.2007] Bei Crave Online gibt es ein Interview mit Matt Groening...
Crave Online: [...] Futurama on Comedy Central, are you frustrated that Fox didn't pick it up like Family Guy?
Matt Groening:
Well, I was frustrated when it got cancelled, but Fox, 20th Television is the one who came back and said, "Would you like to do a DVD movie?" and we said, "Let's do two" and they said, "Well, why not three?" and we said, "Well, why not four?" and they said, "Okay, four" and then that's it.
Crave Online: Are they really full movies or just three episodes together?
Matt Groening:
We're writing them as movies and then we're going to chop them up, reconfigure them, write new material and try to make them work as separate episodes.
Crave Online: Can DVD versions be more extreme than the ones for air?
Matt Groening:
Those are the marching orders we gave ourselves, yes, to really try to push it and do things we might not be able to do on TV. And then Comedy Central picked up the show and we went, "Okay, probably there's nothing we can think of that Comedy Central won't run" because I'm astonished at what I see on Comedy Central every day.
Crave Online: How will you turn those into episodes then?
Matt Groening:
We are reconfiguring them and writing new material and narration and this that and the other so that they'll stand on their own as episodes.
Crave Online: Could it go on beyond that?
Matt Groening:
I hope so. My guess now is that this is basically a season that we're in production on which is complicated because they're also DVDs, so that they'll probably wait and see how they do and then we'll get the pickup.
Crave Online: You never gave up on Futurama, did you?
Matt Groening:
Well, I always felt like we were a little bit like the original Star Trek. I always thought that working with my partner, David X. Cohen, that we knew that the people who loved the show really, really loved it and they wrote petitions, they wrote letters and e-mails and it just seemed right. And also, everybody that worked on the show loved it. So when it came time when the show did come back, everybody without exception said, "I'm on board." At this point, I said, "We're thinking of gearing up the show again." They said, "I'm on board." Everybody, Katy Sagal, all the actors, John Dimaggio, Billy West. The original animation team, the original animation house, the original writers. Everybody came back. It was great.

[23.01.2006] AICN meldet...
[...] Here's the official word on Futurama!!
[Creator/showrunner] David X. [Cohen] phoned me about an hour ago and said that this Futurama project is a done deal! Here's the word from DX--- There are 4 DVD movies that we'll start recording at the end of July or August. Full feature length FUTURAMA movies. [...]

[04.01.2006] CS! meldet...
Variety reports that talks have begun at 20th Century Fox TV to revive the animated series Futurama, which takes place in the next millennium.
The studio is in early discussions to put Futurama back in production and create a limited number of episodes of the Emmy Award-winning series -- although it's too soon to tell where those episodes might end up, adds the trade.
The final original episode of Futurama aired on Fox in August 2003. But since then, the series has found new life -- and fans -- via DVD releases and repeatedly high-rated airings on the Cartoon Network.
Futurama remains popular enough that Comedy Central even stole away off-net rights to the show's repeats late last year; it will switch to the comedy channel in 2008. [...]

[20.12.2005] Slashdot zitiert Matt Groening...
[...] "Matt Groening, creator of The Simpsons and Futurama, says there may yet be hope for a renewed Futurama series, thanks to high DVD sales and syndication ratings. Comments from David X. Cohen: 'Three months ago, I would have said we were going to start tomorrow ... And one month ago I would also have said we were going to start tomorrow. current estimate is that we're starting tomorrow.'" [...]

[14.06.2005] meldet...
Over the last week, several sources from within the animation business have indicated to us that there is renewed talk at FOX about bringing fresh Futurama content directly to DVD. We corroborated this with other sources close to the show before publishing the information.
The talk is of course still in a preliminary stage. Options reported to us include one or more Futurama movies in case of a go-ahead.
Even though Futurama is not sure to return and the likelihood of its return is currently unknown, this is the first time in the past few years that we have heard of Futurama being discussed at the upper levels of FOX. They'll likely have a good look at the sales of the upcoming Futurama Monster Robot Maniac Fun Collection

[16.09.2004] Moviehole meldet...
[...] after speaking with some insiders, I have new word on what exactly is going on, in the form of good news, and bad news.
The Bad News:
It looks more & more likely that Fox will not be picking up "Futurama" for another season, a’la "Family Guy" at the current time, but before every fan screams and turns their computer off, don’t panic, because the good news is actually really good!
The Good News:
As I wrote last week, at the time the show was put on hiatus by the network, there were multiple episodes in the early to 50% stage of development (of what was actually the fifth season of the show), and while these won’t be appearing on television anytime soon, Fox has apparently commissioned the remainder of these episodes to appear in another DVD box set, which will be in one of the following configurations:
1). A two disc set, covering all of the remaining episodes.
2). A 3 disc set, containing the episodes, plus a third disc of "Best Of" episodes, or
3). The above, with a bonus fourth disc containing all new special features.
From what I’ve been told by various people, Fox will be basing a decision to renew on whether this new set sells or not, but have not decided which of the above they will be manufacturing.
Apparently the great sales of the first four sets have not been enough to convince them to pick up another order, unlike "Family Guy", but I have been told that if the new set sales figures do not convince them, they will pass along the option to Cartoon Network.

[10.09.2004] Moviehole meldet...
The word around the campfire is that due to increasingly good sales on the "Futurama" DVD sets and Video Game, Fox may be firing up the grill on another season of Matt Groening’s show.
The series, which was on air for four seasons, never reached the heights of popularity achieved by "The Simpsons", but was applauded by critics & fans everywhere.
At the time the show was "pulled indefinitely", the rumour was that at least another season of the show was in the early to 50% complete stage of production, and may be "revisited further down the road".
Well, according to a couple of sources, they may just have gotten a little further down the road, so hopefully for fans of the show, there will be more Fry, Bender, Leela and Dr. Zoidberg on the way this time next year!

[05.06.2004] Ab heute läuft bei ProSieben die letzte Staffel (17.30 Uhr)... Die letzten 16 Folgen... *g*

[01.08.2003] meldet...

[...] Contrary to popular rumor (and in spite of Fox's hatred for it) Matt says one more season is in the can. They'll go as long as they can, and American DVD's with commentary are in the future. Panel: Matt Groening, David X. Cohen, Billy West, Phil LaMarr, John DiMaggio, and several writers. [...]
