"Nach 7 Tagen - Ausgeflittert"), Billy Crudup (u.a. "Der gute Hirte"), Matthew Goode (u.a. "Match Point"), Carla Gugino (u.a. "Nachts im Museum"), Jackie Earle Haley (u.a. "Little Children"), Stephen McHattie (u.a. "Shoot 'Em Up"), Jeffrey Dean Morgan (u.a. "Grey's Anatomy") und Patrick Wilson (u.a. "Little Children") gespielt...
"Dawn of the Dead"-Remake, "300")...

Twitch meldet... Is this a benchmark moment in the history of bad ideas? Alan Moore doesn't want it. Dave Gibbons doesn't want it. But apparently - after seeing the original vault to their number one spot in all-time sales on the back of Zak Snyder's film version - DC Comics has opened the door to the possibility of Watchmen 2 hitting the printed page. The talk is apparently not so much a direct sequel but an expansion of the Watchmen world, which I suppose could mean prequels or stories running in parallel or perhaps other stories involving the main Watchmen crew. [...] I was glad our version didn’t get done, the one that Charles McKeown and I had wrote, because we had reduced it down to about two hours and five minutes I think and we lost so much. Comedian was cut down to next to nothing. So (Zack Snyder) did a good job, but it just felt... I also thought THE INCREDIBLES had kind of fucked it for him. [...]
I think WATCHMEN really bothered me, because I thought it should be better. It was all there. It looked right, but to me it was pace. It didn’t have pace. It needed a bit more quirkiness in there. Dr. Manhatten was getting boring, frankly, and then Ozymandias by the end I thought "Oh, come on!" They lost me by the end, frankly, but it was certainly looking better than what I was going to do! THR.com berichtet über die US-Einspielergebnisse... [...] Warner Bros.' much-watched release of the epic-length actioner "Watchmen" wound up topping the domestic boxoffice with a weekend haul estimated at $55.7 million for an opening in the far lower end of pre-release projections.
Directed by Zack Snyder, there had been much speculation over whether "Watchmen" would bow higher than the helmer's ancient Greece actioner "300," which debuted with $70.9 million in March 2007. "Watchmen" had a field free from other wide openers following a high-profile courtroom battle between Warners and Fox for the right to release the cult comic-book adaptation.
Fox will share in up to 8.5% of boxoffice under terms of a court-supervised settlement. Co-financier Paramount holds foreign rights on the pic. [...]

Bei Moviehole gibt es ein Interview mit Jeffrey D. Morgan alias Comedian... Und CS! spricht über die US-Einspielergebnisse... [...] Warner Bros. Pictures' Watchmen dominated the domestic box office this weekend, but was held back by its long 2:40 running time and less showings. The Zack Snyder-directed graphic novel adaptation earned an estimated $55.7 million from 3,611 theaters, for an average of $15,413 per location. Made for about $150 million, Watchmen marks the third-highest March opening of all time, trailing just Snyder's own 300 ($70.9 million) and Ice Age: The Meltdown ($68 million). The debut is also the sixth best for an R-rated film. IMAX theaters accounted for $5.5 million of the film's $55.7 million opening, which is the company's best opening-weekend number after The Dark Knight's $6.3 million. Internationally, Watchmen topped the box office as well with $27.5 million from 5,097 theaters in 45 markets. Worldwide, the film has earned $83.2 million after three days. [...]

Variety.com berichtet über die US-Einspielergebnisse... Warner Bros.' "Watchmen" grossed $4.6 million in Thursday midnight runs, more than double the midnight gross for Zack Snyder's previous film "300."
Pic played more than 1,595 midnight run across the country.
All of the 124 Imax midnight runs were sold out to the point that the exhib added 3 a.m. shows. Imax says much of the weekend is sold out.
Today, "Watchmen" officially opens in a total 3,611 theaters. That's the widest theater count ever for an R-rated film.
"300" grossed $70.9 million in its opening weekend in early March 2006 and had a Thursday midnight gross of $2.5 million. Box observers believe "Watchmen" will beat that weekend number, despite its lengthy running time of 2:40. Especially after Fandango recently reported that 92% of its tickets sales were for "Watchmen." (As of 9:00 a.m. PST, Friday, March 6th)
"Watchmen" is Snyder's first directorial outing since "300."
It also is the first major day-and-date release of 2009. Paramount is Warners and Legendary Pictures' partner on the film, and is handling the film overseas.
Twentieth Century Fox also gets a cut of the film's gross part of its legal settlement with Warners.

However high "Watchmen" grosses can climb, the superhero actioner sure will be playing wide: Its 3,611 playdates will be the most ever for an R-rated film.
Further aiding its much-watched bow, the Zack Snyder-helmed comic book adaptation will play in an impressive 1,600 locations starting at midnight Thursday. That's substantially more than the 656 midnight shows that helped Snyder's ancient Greece actioner "300" fetch an incredible $28 million in only the first day of its $71 million opening weekend in March 2007.
The first-day haul for "300" was the second-highest ever for an R-rated pic, after the $42.5 million tally that Warners registered with 2003's "The Matrix Reloaded," according to Nielsen EDI. The previous widest release for an R-rated pic was the distributor's 3,603-theater bow for "Reloaded."
Warners distribution president Dan Fellman said "Watchmen" wasn't a tough sell with theater owners.
"The reaction at our exhibitor screenings was terrific, and after the success of '300,' there wasn't an exhibitor in the country who didn't want to play Zack Snyder's next movie," Fellman said.
The "Watchmen" playdates include 124 engagements in Imax giant-screen auditoriums.
"All will have midnight shows, and that's a function of demand," Imax Filmed Entertainment president Greg Foster said. "If there weren't midnight shows, there would be a riot. The demand is very, very strong."
Imax's Web site crashed four times this week because of traffic surges by "Watchmen" fans looking for ticket information, Foster said.
Online ticketer Fandango said Wednesday that "Watchmen" purchases represented 90% of its advance ticket sales for this weekend. No other wide opener is set for the frame. [...]

Bei EW.com gibt es eine Kritik... [...] On the page, Watchmen was a paranoid, mind-tripping pastiche of everything from The Incredible Hulk to Naked Lunch. But when characters who are knowing throwbacks are literally brought to life on screen, they can seem more like half-hearted ripoffs. What gave the graphic novel its hint of metaphysical cachet is the way that it collapsed chronology. The '40s blurred into the '80s, the present spilled into a desolate abyss - and that telescoping of time became a metaphor for the inevitability of nuclear war. A no-future nihilism bled from the very grain of Moore and Gibbons' pop vision of the 20th century. But that's a real problem for the movie, since the Cold War nuclear fears of the '80s never did come to pass. Watchmen isn't boring, but as a fragmented sci-fi doomsday noir, it remains as detached from the viewer as it is from the zeitgeist. B-

THR.com meldet... Of all the people watching how "Watchmen" does at the boxoffice, Larry Gordon might have the most complicated feelings.
The veteran producer has an A-list backend deal on Warner Bros.' R-rated graphic novel adaptation and stands to gain financially if it becomes a hit. But if Warners has its way, Gordon also could be on the hook to Warners for a hefty percentage of the film's grosses based on his role in the legal debacle that ended with Fox owning a piece of the "Watchmen" property.
For this reason, Gordon and Warners have put off until after the $130 million Zack Snyder epic opens next Friday to resolve their standoff over what amount -- if anything -- Gordon should reimburse the studio for the cost of settling the litigation.
A clear idea of what Gordon might be liable for won't emerge until the film has largely played out, which could be a month or two, but if the pic is a mega-grosser, it could be tens of millions.
Fox sued Warners last February, claiming copyright infringement based on agreements the studio had with Gordon in the early 1990s.
The case was a rare public showdown between studios over a potential blockbuster and highlighted the challenge of maintaining a clear chain of title on projects that bounce around in development over many years.
When Judge Gary Feess ruled Dec. 24 that Gordon did not secure proper rights to "Watchmen" from Fox, Warners settled the case rather than face a possible injunction against the film's release.
The Warners settlement gave Fox a $1.5 million reimbursement for development costs as well as up to 8.5% of the film's worldwide grosses, although the percentage is lower until the film breaks even.
That could put Gordon in a strange position: The better the film does, the more he could pocket as a profit participant but the more he might have to fork over to make Warners whole. That's because Warners claims its agreements with Gordon contain an indemnity clause requiring the producer to reimburse it for any unforeseen problems with the pic.
Neither Gordon nor his litigation lawyer Dale Kinsella would comment, but they have maintained in court filings that Gordon is not responsible for the litigation and owes Warners nothing. Reps for Warners also declined to comment, but several sources said the studio plans to aggressively pursue Gordon for the settlement costs. In court papers Warners said Gordon should be liable "for all damages Warner Bros. suffers as a result of Fox's claims."
Complicating matters further is Gordon's position in the litigation that his own transactional attorneys who negotiated the deals are in part to blame for the mess. Gordon's litigation lawyers, who are not in the same firm as the transactional attorneys, wrote to Judge Feess that Fox's lawsuit might be traced to errors in the negotiation process by Fox as well as by Gordon's own counsel at the Jake Bloom law firm.
Gordon, who is still repped by the Bloom firm, is now said to be pushing for that firm's malpractice insurance carrier to make a contribution to any financial settlement. The Bloom firm declined to comment.
But the amount of any settlement will depend on how well the film does.
"Watchmen" premiered Monday night in London to mixed reviews, with the critic from tabloid News of the World (which is owned by Fox topper Rupert Murdoch) calling the 2-1/2 hour epic "spirit-crushingly disappointing" but several others predicting approval from fans of the Alan Moore-Dave Gibbons graphic novel.

[...] Critics gave it mixed reviews, with several predicting approval from the hardcore comic book fan fraternity.
How it plays to a wider audience, however, will be more important to its commercial prospects.
"For those just watching 'Watchmen' for the Watchmen, without any expectations or knowledge of the comic's storyline or historical importance, this really will be a blast," wrote Mike Ragogna in the Huffington Post.
But Robbie Collin, of Britain's top-selling tabloid weekly News of the World, disagreed:
"This two-and-a-half-hour wannabe pop culture epic isn't the worst superhero movie ever made ... but it is one of the most spirit-crushingly disappointing," he said. [...]
