CS! meldet...
If Brian De Palma moves ahead with prequel The Untouchables: Capone Rising, it will be sans Nicolas Cage, reports Variety.
Cage had been in negotiations to star in the follow-up, but talks have ended because of scheduling issues, according to his representatives.
Relativity Media is financing the film, while Paramount has domestic distribution rights. Art Linson, who produced De Palma's 1987 pic The Untouchables, is producing the prequel as well.
It was announced last week that Gerard Butler has joined the cast as Jimmy Malone, played by Sean Connery in the original. Cage would have played the young Al Capone.

[...] according to Production Weekly, the director is rarin' to film a prequel to the film entitled THE UNTOUCHABLES: CAPONE RISING or some shit, which DePalma is eyeing to begin shooting in June of 2007, for a 2008 release. The film, co-written by the dudes who wrote ROUNDERS and OCEAN'S 13, Brian Koppelman and David Levien, will apparently focus on Al Capone's rise to power in Chicago, as well as his relationship with police detective and nemesis Jimmy Malone-- played by Sean Connery in the original film.
No word on whether or not Robert DeNiro will reprise his role as gangster Capone, but seeing as he's busy filming movies with 50 Cent these days, my impression would be that he wouldn't be back for this prequel. Maybe they're gonna cast the actor who was supposed to play Capone in the original before DeNiro, Bob Hoskins. [...]

[25.08.2004] CS! meldet...
Paramount has hired screenwriters David Levien and Brian Koppelman - who just rewrote Brett Ratner's Josiah's Canon - to write The Untouchables: Capone Rising a prequel to the 1987 film to be directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, King Arthur).
The film will center on Capone and the early version of Irish cop Jimmy Malone, who is as crooked as every other Chicago cop until Capone becomes king of the underworld.
"The film starts on the eve of Capone's arrival, and while Malone wasn't the most corrupt cop, he operated at a time when every cop was on the take," Levien told the trade. "Once he crosses paths with Capone, he sees a level of violence and criminality that causes him to have a moral awakening."
"This period of Capone's life hasn't been done since the movies of the '40s and '50s," Koppelman added. "Sherry Lansing and Donald De Line said feel free to come up with the most compelling, dark, violent and complicated guy you've ever seen."

Paramount and producer Art Linson are developing a spin-off to The Untouchables, the 1987 feature directed by Brian De Palma and starring Kevin Costner as Eliot Ness and Robert De Niro as Al Capone. Variety reports that King Arthur director Antoine Fuqua may be sitting in the director's chair.
The film, now in its preliminary stages, is being called The Untouchables: Mother's Day, and will focus on the rise of Chicago mob kingpin Capone, in the years before Ness and his lawmen.
The Untouchables was also a 1959-63 TV series starring Robert Stack as Ness. Both the series and the De Palma feature were based on the novel of the same name by Oscar Fraley.
