"Timeline" ist die Verfilmung des Romans "Timeline" von Michael Crichton... Regie führt Richard Donner (u.a.

"The Fast and the Furious"), die Architektin Kate (Frances O'Connor, u.a. "A.I.

[...] His whole theory of time travel was extraordinarily interesting, and therefore the usage of it, in a commercial vein - which is what the book was predicated on - was fascinating, but when you try to say that in 50 words or less, you're in a lot of trouble. So we took the liberty of changing it from somebody who's gone out to invent time travel, and we made it inadvertent - much like in The Omen they were victims of circumstance rather than the reality of it, that demonic beings couldn't be. So in this we changed it to that they were in the process of trying to develop a dimensional fax machine - much like a few years back you never thought that you could go to your telephone and a piece of paper would come through it. What we designed was that they were trying to build a machine that could fax a 3-D object, and in so doing, they inadvertently opened a wormhole, and they found that you could traverse it. And that wormhole - for some indescribable, unsolvable reason - went to 1357 France. So they sponsored the dig because they wanted to find out a reason from the academics why the wormhole only goes there. I felt, in doing this, it was much easier to explain it in short paragraphs than to explain it as time machines. You had to make departures. We had to join some characters together as one. We made the boy in the piece the professor's son rather than a student, because we felt the ties that bind in relationships of family are stronger. [...]

[...]Yeah, we had some re-shoots. The first couple minutes of the movie, Dick didn't want to focus on the science fiction end of it, because basically you know, what they've done more or less, is in the process of this company, he's funding this archeological dig, they've stumbled upon this wormhole, so what they're trying to make basically was a virtual like 3-D fax machine, so as supposed to faxing a piece a paper, they can now fax that Evian bottle, and Dick was like, man, this whole like sci-fi time machine, and blah, blah, blah. He's like, that's really not what interests me. He's---I just want to race through that and get more back to medieval France because to me, that's when the fun really begins, when the movie really kicks off, and so, we just wanted to get through it, but as a result, like a lot of the dynamics, the character dynamics, what was really going on and what you're feeling for the characters is important to have that established before we got back, because as soon as we’re back, then we're running the whole time, basically running for our lives. [...]

[...] "The medieval set is awesome," he said. "I've also seen some of the movie, so I can tell you that it's spectacular looking. They spent $90 million on it, and it's all up there." [...]

[...] The cinematography was quite excellent, featurning many lovely locales. The actors actually did a decent job with their underwritten characters (Ethan Embry was also in it, in a role which could have been much more). The script, despite mishandling the characters, was actually quite sharp. Dialogue was usually crisp. And the action was quite good, as most medieval action is. There is some kickass trebuchet action, and Donner pushes the envelope with the violence in what will be most likely a PG-13 flick. There is particularly one sequence that left me floored. It involved opposing armies shooting flaming arrows into the night's sky, and intersecting. It looked quite stunning.
The film was a work in progress, so many of thes elements hopefully will be fixed. One in particular could elevate this movie from "good" to "great." The score. The score is imperative in a movie like this. It could make or break some scenes. Yeah, a good epic score could really make this movie. I'm not saying it'll top THE GOONIES use of Cyndi Lauper, but it could make TIMELINE something special.
As of this moment, I'd recommend this film. [...]

[02.10.2002] "CS!" meldet...
Director Richard Donner told columnists Marilyn Beck and Stacy Jenel Smith that Timeline has finished post-production.
The adaptation of Michael Crichton's story about the Hundred Years' War was anything but a snap, says the helmer. "We shot in Montreal for five months, and it was a pain in the butt."
The Paul Walker/Gerard Butler starrer, about three students who travel back to the 14th century to rescue their professor, started shooting in March and finished principal production in July, says Donner, "and we spent the majority of that time cold, wet and in the freezing mud. In mid-June, we were still wearing fur-lined jackets." [...]

[13.07.2002] Bei "JAM! Movies" gibt es einen Set-Bericht...
[...] Donner's set has miraculously been spared the smoke pollution that has spread out from the nine fires raging out of control further north at James Bay. Instead, he'll create his own fires today, under strict control. A fire brigade spent hours hosing down the woodlot near the village to keep it safe during the shoot.
Other than that, things look real. Donner would rather build something tactile -- such as the medieval village and its ancient manor house here at the Campbell farm, or the full-scale castle the production built and then destroyed on another Quebec location -- than create it using slick computer effects.
"You swear it's real," Donner says of the sets created by production designer Daniel Dorrance and the rest of his team. "These guys are fabulous. They are geniuses. You're so limited with the CGI. I've never done it -- and I don't want to do it." [...]

[30.05.2002] "Dark Horizons" meldet...
The first stage of set shooting has finished with exteriors at Terrebone just about to start.

[...] Director Richard Donner and Michael Crichton, author of the time-travel novel on which the film is based, promise a realistic look at the time period, without all the glamorous movie trappings sometimes associated with medieval drama. Friel added, "We're not allowed to use the word 'time machine' in it, because then it becomes one of those time movies. [Donner] is making it very realistic. There's lots of gore, and it's a real representation of the time."
As for how the gore and research affect her performance, Friel could not say, since she only recently began work. "To be honest, I've only done two days' shooting, and I don't really want to go into too much detail," she said. "It's going great. I'm really enjoying it. It's the biggest set I've ever been on, the $80 million-budget thing. Lots of jumping into the waterfalls and sword fighting and horse riding. It's great."

[05.04.2002] Bei "Latino Review" gibt es ein weiteres Script-Review...
[...] Despite my gripes, it sounds like it should be an entertaining romp with many young pretty faces and just enough substance to keep you interested. And although it does END like a fairy tale, the fight scenes seem like they will be gritty and gruesome battles. Besides, can any movie that has a "Sword Master" listed in it’s credits (ThomasDuPont) be that bad? Well...Can it?...

[30.01.2002] Bei "IGN FilmForce" gibt es ein Script-Review...
[...] Production is (finally) set to begin in Montreal this April under the direction of Richard Donner (the Lethal Weapon series), who will also produce the pic along with his wife Lauren Shuler Donner (X-Men). The only cast members announced so far are Paul Walker (The Fast and the Furious) and Gerard Butler (Dracula 2000). Paramount Pictures is aiming to release Timeline sometime during summer 2003.
[...] If it holds true to the promise shown in this draft, Timeline could be among next summer's most entertaining event films.

[...] So it is to George Nolfi’s credit that he managed to take TIMELINE, strip it down of anything extraneous, and turn it into a sleek, streamlined script that should play sensationally with the right cast attached. Richard Donner’s going to have one of the most strenuous shoots of his career with this one, and if he follows the script as written, one of the roughest adventure films we’ve seen in recent memory. [...]

[18.04.2000] "Upcomingmovies.com" meldet...
The sale of the rights to this newest Michael Crichton book made quite a bit of news in Fall, 1999 because of the unusual upfront price Crichton was asking for... $0 (though there were also several stipulations, such as Crichton getting 15% of the box office up to $15 million). Anyway, several studios considered the sale, Paramount won, and now Jeff Maguire is working on a script with a production date loosely expected to be sometime this summer, 2000.
