Quint: [...] What's next? I'm particularly interested in where you guys are at with the Temeraire series and if you are going to be moving on that any time soon.
Peter Jackson: It's certainly a project that this next year... I've always looked on 2010 as being the year where I kind of get to the next level on a few projects because 2009 has been really the year of Lovely Bones and District 9 and getting TinTin motion captured and also getting most of The Hobbit script written. Certainly by the end of 2009 The Hobbit screenplay will be finished. So, that's that year taken care of and then 2010 is an opportunity to move on with several projects.
What I'm thinking of with Temeraire, and I'm certainly happy to share it with you... it's only really my very initial, early stages... but Naomi (Novik, author of the Temeraire books) came out to New Zealand to visit us with her husband... she's absolutely terrific...
Quint: Yeah, they're good people. Her and Charles (Ardai, Naomi's husband and a gifted writer in his own right) both.
Peter Jackson: Yes. She's now starting to whisper to me that she's going to be writing 9 books in the Temeraire series. I can't see any degree of common sense in trying to mount them one at a time as feature films. To me the stories, having read the first ones, already work as this continuing, on-going saga, so I'm thinking "Is there a marketplace out there yet for a large budget mini-series?"
I guess you'd think of things like HBO and you'd think of Band of Brothers and that sort of thing, but it'd be different than that. The market's changing so much, TV networks are changing, so I'm thinking is there actually a market out there that'd give us the budget to do this properly and allow us to shoot this as a 6, 7 or 8 part series where we have freedom, we have great production values and are able to tackle it as the epic saga that it deserves.
I just can't see doing one expensive movie and if that's successful you get to do another one, but if the second one isn't quite as good maybe there'll never be a third one... I just don't see that fitting with the property at all.
Quint: Yeah. While I wouldn't say every book ends on a cliffhanger the war is still ongoing now a good 5 books into the series. The main story thread is still unresolved. You don't want a set up that doesn't pay off... like The Golden Compass.
Peter Jackson: Yeah. So my thinking is... and I'm talking to you here having absolutely no plans in place, no deal in place... and I wouldn't. What I would do is I'd start developing the treatment, I'd start to break the storylines down to see if we can structure it in that way. I've already started to do designs. I've had Weta Workshop do a lot of work on designing the characters... the dragons... I've been working with Gus Hunter on the designs. We're well underway creating the visual look.
In 2010 one of the things I'll be doing is looking at starting the scripting process and structuring and using it to see if we can't set the project up in that way because I think that'd be the best to serve the story. [...]
Quint von AICN berichtet von der Comic-Con 2009...
[...] Peter’s still very keen to adapt Naomi Novik’s series and says once HOBBIT gets going he’ll look at it. [...]
Bei AICN gibt es ein Interview mit Naomi Novik...
QUINT: [...] Do you see TEMERAIRE continuing as a series indefinitely or do you plan to stop after a certain number of books?
NAOMI NOVIK: I've agreed on another 3 books with Del Ray, which will take us up through Book 6. I have ideas, fairly clear outlines in my head, for those 3 books. I haven't really thought far beyond that. I would not continue the series if I didn't have particular ideas that I still wanted to explore just to continue it. But there are all sorts of things that I would like to explore, that I've dropped little hints about in the earlier books... things like the Incas. I'd love to get to visit them. Explore the Colonies, explore Australia, in this universe. There's, of course, India and a possible return to China.
So, there's all these ideas that I have, which are largely structured in terms of how dragons and humans interact differently in different parts of the world. That's one thing that I've been having a lot of fun exploring.
I do believe in making each book fairly stand alone. Obviously there are limitations because I want it to feel organic, I want it to feel like the continuing life of Laurence and Temeraire, but at the same time I kind of like to wrap up one major plot within each book and have it be self-contained within that book so that it's not impossible to pick them up out of order. At least that it's not impossible to re-read them out of order. [...]
[...] The one thing I am going to do is I'll start the guys at WETA designing some things. We've just acquired the rights ourselves. We haven't gone in conjunction with a studio or anything else. We just bought it ourselves.
The thing we'll do is we'll develop the screenplays on spec and then we'll design it. Which is really the first thing I want to do, is have Weta do a design pass of the characters and the world. Get Gus (Hanson) and those guys to have a go at it, which we'll do at some point when the HALO stuff is mainly done. So, we'll start with that and once THE LOVELY BONES gets all tied up and in good shape we'll start to think about this series.
I don't really know yet how we'll structure it, because obviously it's more than one film, for sure, so it'll be interesting to just have a think about that. And it's the future books, too... I think Naomi is already doing her 4th book and I think she's planning a 5th and 6th book as well. We've optioned all TEMERAIRE books, including future ones. [...]
Peter Jackson is eyeing his next fantasy series, optioning "Temeraire." The historical fantasy series ("His Majesty's Dragon," "Throne of Jade" and "Black Powder War") was written by Naomi Novik.
The "Temeraire" saga reimagines the world of the Napoleonic Wars with the addition of an air force of dragons and valiant aviators. It centers on British naval Capt. Will Laurence, who captures a French ship, where he discovers an unhatched dragon egg in the hold -- a gift from the Emperor of China intended for Napoleon. When the egg hatches, he is forced to give up his naval career to become captain of the dragon he names Temeraire.
" 'Temeraire' is a terrific meld of two genres that I particularly love -- fantasy and historical epic," Jackson said. "I can't wait to see Napoleonic battles fought with a squadron of dragons. That's what I go to the movies for."
Jackson also is looking to take the books into the realm of interactive entertainment.
Novik wrote the first "Temeraire" book in 2004. When Del Rey saw it, the publisher asked for two more books. The series was launched in the spring.
"As I was reading these books, I could see them coming to life in my mind's eye," Jackson said. "These are beautifully written novels, not only fresh, original and fast-paced, but full of wonderful characters with real heart."
Jackson has not yet decided whether he will make one movie or three or if the books can be introduced by other media first.
In that vein, Jackson has optioned Alice Sebold's The Lovely Bones and is writing the adaptation with partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens on spec with the intent of speaking to distributors after the script is done. He plans to direct the movie in the second-half 2007.
Novik is writing the fourth installment of the series. [...]
Quint von AICN schreibt über den Roman "His Majesty's Dragon"... Vorsicht SPOILER !!!
[...] The book supposes that during this historical conflict the UK and France not only had ground troops and Naval warships, but also had an Air Force composed of dragons and their masters.
There are many different breeds of dragons, some that are used for their speed, agility, strength, endurance, etc. Very much like planes in modern warfare, except in this reality the planes have their own instincts, emotions and, occasionally, the ability to spit acid or breathe fire, although fire-breathing dragons are very rare in Novik's universe, which allows her to set this story apart in a significant way from most dragon tales.
[...] And because Novik writes this story in a very grounded and real way as an alternate reality to our own, you're not sure that Napoleon is doomed to fail. In a world where there are huge dragons carrying dozens of riflemen and crew attacking ships and other dragons, you can't be sure where else that reality will stray from our own.
Needless to say, Novik's aerial combat at the end is massive, bloody and heart-pounding. The action is enormous, but never overly complicated. It would be exhilarating to see it pulled off on the big screen. [...]

Peter Jackson über "interactive entertainment"...
[...] I'm also interested in exploring a sort of interactive... not video games as we know them today, but something that sort of melds a serialized interactive entertainment somehow. I just got interested in that area and I've been looking for something that'd be suitable for that. It's early days yet.
What I love about what George Lucas has done with STAR WARS, which I think is really cool, is that you have the movies and the movies, obviously, are the flagships of the saga, of the storytelling, but you have the comic books and the novels and everything that fills out what happens inbetween the films and what happens in other places while the films are occurring. I love that expansion of the world. This is, to me, has also got the same possibilities. The movies can be the epics and there can be other forms of entertainment that can be running alongside the movies, expanding the world of the books and the story. [...]
