[24.07.2007] STYD zitiert Roger Avary bzgl. "Silent Hill 2"...
Last week's Silent Hill 2 piece generated much speculation across the web that the proposed sequel was crumbling.
Not so, as Silent Hill scribe Roger Avary explains, "'Silent Hill 2' isn't in any kind of trouble, and they didn't lose their writer since I was never hired to do it in the first place. Christophe [Gans] is still guiding the project, Samuel Hadida and Andrew Mason are still producing. I have another project with Samuel, which I'm directing, and I'm giving it priority. Again, 'Silent Hill 2' isn't in trouble, and may in fact come together faster without me considering my schedule."

Mit Dank an Michael A.

[19.07.2007] IGN meldet...
The proposed Silent Hill sequel, which might have gone into production this year, has hit a snag. Two of them. It appears that both director Christophe Gans and writer Roger Avary are taking a pass on the next film adapted from the popular Silent Hill video game series.
Back in December, Gans told the French magazine DVDrama that the sequel had been ordered by Sony, and that he and Avery, who worked closely together on the first film, would be doing the second as well. However, Gans has another game-to-movie adaptation in the works - Onimusha - and he suggested at the time that if things got too busy for him, another director would have to take on the Silent sequel.
"If I cannot take on Silent Hill 2 myself, the director who does would need to continue in the same style as the first film," Gans had told the magazine. "One does not want to make a Hollywood-style movie, and I think that it makes sense if the director of the sequel is European - in the best case scenario, French."
It now appears that Gans is indeed too busy, and is bowing out of Silent Hill 2. And according to Shock Till You Drop.com, no Gans means no Avery as well.
"I'm not gonna do Silent Hill 2. If Christophe's not gonna do it, I'm not," said Avery, whose past screenwriting credits include Pulp Fiction and The Rules of Attraction.
If Sony is still set on the picture, new talent will have to be found. [...]

[05.03.2007] Quint von AICN sprach mit Laurie Holden über "Silent Hill 2"...
[...] We talked a little about SILENT HILL (she was the cop in the movie) and she told me they were going forward with a sequel, but that Christophe Gans hasn’t made up his mind whether he’d do it or not. [...]

[...] "I'm afraid that I don't think I am - I mean, it's the first thing I've ever heard of it, and I'm sure that if they make a sequel Roger [Avary] would want to write it himself. I am writing Black Hole with Roger (we're one draft in right now), and we already wrote next year's Beowulf. If I get home to find an invitation to write Silent Hill 2 with Roger is waiting for me I'll let you all know, but for right now I think it's a discredited internet rumour." [...]

[25.12.2006] CS! meldet...
In a French interview with Silent Hill director Christophe Gans at DVDRama, he says he may direct a sequel to the 2006 hit. There is a translation here which reads:
There will be a Silent Hill 2. [Roger] Avary returns after adapting the VG Driver.
Gans is happy because Silent Hill is one of the biggest horror success of 2006 in terme of box-office. He arrives 3rd after Saw 3 and an american haunting.
One of his goals for Silent Hill 2 is to correct mistakes he made with the 1st one which cost him a lot of energy. However, he wonders if he can truly come back for a 2nd movie because of Onimusha. He says that if he doesn't come back, producers agree with him that the 2nd movie should keep the visual aspect of the 1st one. There is no way they are bringing a whole new vision of the town's design. He doesn't want a hollywoodian movie. If he doesn't come back as a director, he strongly suggest an European (and even a French) one. He will however stay close to this movie. [...]

[23.12.2006] Kotaku berichtet über "Silent Hill 5"...
Konami and series producer/music man Akira Yamaoka have been silent on the next-gen chapter of the groundbreaking horror franchise. But recently, according to fansite Silent Hill Origins, Yamaoka spoke to Famitsu, spilling some psychologically frightening beans.
Our first hint about the content and style of the game is this:
"I cannot say much about the development of the game but i can say we are working on a new unique idea of fear in daylight and the game will play like Silent Hill 2's psychological roots."
And what console or consoles will the game appear? Akira dodges the question:
"We cannot say yet but we are hoping to carry on the plans of the earlier silent hill platforms."
Well, that sounds like it will hit the PlayStation 3, but who knows? Only Konami. [...]

[27.11.2006] GameFront meldet...

[...] I can’t even recall the last time I was so locked into a movie. Radha Mitchell’s fear is so real it becomes your own. It’s not you just watching Rose flee in terror ... it’s you on the edge of your seat waiting to be able to catch your breath. [...]
After a time we become like Pavlov’s dog, conditioned to sink into our seats with the blasting of every siren. I mean ... come on!! Isn’t a ghost town with ash falling from the sky bad enough? You have to watch hell take over every few hours or so, too? With hell comes familiar video game characters like the skittering black bugs, the faceless nurses, and fan favorite Pyramid Head. I’ll save the rest, unseen in commercials and clips, as a surprise. None of these characters disappoint. Director Christophe Gans proves he has studied this game time and again and recreates every aspect with painstaking detail. When it comes to the creatures, Gans takes the uneasy feelings stirred up by these demons and folds that into visceral, surreal manifestations the likes of which only Clive Barker could imagine. Sound plays a huge part in sucking you into the story. Music drives you through scenes dictating the pace, reflecting feeling and sometimes forcing your internal need to want to run. Sound effects blast across the theater adding some "jump moments" to an already heart-wrenching ride. The combination of all these elements creates a fully cohesive universe which at times will be hard to live in, but you’ll never look away.
[...] Silent Hill is without a doubt the most faithful adaptation of a video game ever made while still being a damn fun ride. You are looking at 30% mystery and 70% pure horror. There is more blood, human remains, and in-your-face kills in this film than we’ve seen on the screen in a looooong time. [...]

CS: [...] Any idea what you're doing next?
Gans:
I'm working on an adaptation of another game, which is very different atmosphere. It's going to be so different from "Silent Hill." (He wouldn't say which game it was, as much as I tried to coax him to tell.)
CS: But are you just writing that or will you direct it as well?
Gans:
Yeah, I will have to direct it very soon. They want me to start the shoot next March, because they also want that I do the sequel of "Silent Hill" if this movie is very successful. But it's okay, I'm very happy to work. [...]

[12.04.2006] CS! meldet...
In researching different elements of Silent Hill, screenwriter Roger Avary came across a town called Centralia, which is in Pennsylvania. Centralia planted the seed for what developed into the town of Silent Hill.
As recently as 1981 there were over 1,000 residents living in Centralia, although the population has now dwindled to 11, as a result of a 40 year mine fire burning beneath the borough. Not unlike Silent Hill, which was left deserted since devastating coal fires ravaged the town and its people.
A trash fire was lit in an abandoned mine pit in Centralia, in 1962. The fire ignited an exposed vein of coal and spread throughout the mines beneath the borough. Several attempts have been made and millions of dollars have been spent unsuccessfully to extinguish this fire, that still burns today.
You can read more about the town here and video footage of Centralia is available in Real format here.

SPOILER !!!
[...] When the online journalists visited the set on that July day, they were filming scenes in a hospital. Radha Mitchell, bloodied, shirt-torn and generally quite bashed up is moving through a long, dark hallway in the hospital searching for her daughter. What makes it difficult for Rose to mobilize in this scene is the Dark Nurses. The Dark Nurses are just some of the evil villains in the movie; they are blind and vicious. Rose has to weave through these rows of wicked Nurses quietly and carefully and only with a small flashlight, as every time the flashlight is moved, the Nurses move. The only time the Nurses see someone is when the flashlight shines on them, in which case they take their deadly instrument, the scalpel, and slash away. If the flashlight is off, they can't see her. Samuel Hadida, the film's main producer, tells us that "All of the nurses movements have been choreographed, just when the light hits them they're moving."
We spoke with director Gans on the set, who informed us of his struggle to get the movie made, and how he was going to make it. "We were three gamers sitting around a table trying to figure out how to make this movie. We spent five years trying to make the film. We had to call Konami and get them to let us make it." Asked how he was going to transform a video game into a full-fledged movie, he reveals "' Jacob's Ladder' is the root of Silent Hill. But it is such a beautiful creation that exists by itself. [We decided to] stick with the video game. It's beautiful already."

[27.01.2006] GameFront meldet...

[28.09.2005] Edge Online sprach mit Drehbuchautor Roger Avary über "Silent Hill" und andere Videospiel-Verfilmungen...
[...] The difficulty with Silent Hill is that it's an abstract experience - you're making something that's dreamlike in many ways, and where someone’s in an alternate dimension. Christophe was showing me all sorts of crazy movies at the time, stuff like Horror Hotel [known as City Of The Dead outside the US], and I quickly realised that the one special skill that he wanted from me was bombastic speeches. Christophe loves the big moment. What he wants to do is to make every single moment in his films the big moment. If someone's walking through a doorway, he wants it to be the best walking through a doorway scene of all time. He'll shoot it with techno-cranes and computer graphics and do all sorts of things to make sure that moment is unlike any of its kind that you’ve seen before.
So I sat down and I turned the dialogue moments into something akin to what John Milius [screenplay writer of Apocalypse Now, writer of Conan The Barbarian and uncredited author of the U.S.S. Indianapolis scene in Jaws] would write. When Milius writes a speech, it's always this big, powerful, impressive moment where people are talking in hyperbolic terms and everything they say is quantifiably profound. I wanted the movie to have that feeling of a witch movie, because that's essentially what it is at the end of the day. Also, Christophe wanted the movie to be oestrogen-filled. [...]

[13.07.2005] CS! sprach mit Sean Bean, u.a. über "Silent Hill"...
[...] Bean doesn't play the bad guy in Silent Hill, but instead, he plays a father and husband to Radha Mitchell (Melinda and Melinda), trying to find his wife and child. Since he hadn't played the game, he didn't know how it compared, but he did think fans of the game will appreciate it. "I think the game is quite psychologically demanding, because it's not about chopping people up," he told us. "It's about using your brain, and I think this will be really good because Christophe Gans, the director of 'Brotherhood of the Wolf', has given it a really quirky, bizarre feel, very spooky and sort of like a European genre film."
He went on to tell us about the plot: "It's about this place called Silent Hill, and our daughter is kind of disturbed about it. She keeps mentioning it, and she's trying to get out of the house and go there, so my wife decides that it might be a good idea to take her there to confront her fears. She gets involved with a very murky and dangerous world, very creepy, which is all in different time levels, as well. I'm in the real world and I'm trying to find them, but we're on different planes, so it's quite interesting, because I can hear her, but I can't see her. The way he shoots it is just constant fog and cobwebs around the Silent Hill world, while the real world is more normal." [...]

Silent Hill set visit. I'm here in Toronto visiting the set of Silent Hill. The soundstages are filled with the amazing work of Carol Spier -- giant, vaulted, three-story interiors as well as numerous winding corridors that are representations straight out of the game. I can't show you any pictures, because photography is harshly restricted -- but I can tell you with no hesitation that they are simply HUGE. Seeing the nine-foot-tall Red Pyramid wander around alongside the four-foot gray children somehow makes the mood on the set oddly joyful. The funniest part was during lunch, watching the colorless, drab-looking Silent Hill inhabitants (costumed to a apocalyptic perfection by Wendy Partridge) mulling about with their trays of food. Later, editor Sebastien Prangere shows me and my daughter some cut footage -- and it's striking, even though it hasn't yet been treated with the many layers of effects and filters that will give it the Silent Hill feel. The most difficult part for me is that I constantly have the urge to walk up and start giving direction -- but I'm just a writer on this set, and there's only room for one captain of the ship. One thing is for certain as I watch Christophe set up a multi-camera sequence with dueling Technocranes: the shots are pure Gans. His eye is evident in every setup, and in every choice of lens (anamorphic 24mm seems to be a favorite). This is, without question, a Christophe Gans film.

[30.04.2005] Bei Bloody-Disgusting und Live-Journal gibt es neue Bilder vom Set...

[29.04.2005] Bei DH gibt es folgende Pressemeldung...

Principal photography is due to begin Monday in Toronto on the suspense horror feature, directed by Frenchman Christophe Gans ("Brotherhood of the Wolf"), and will run through July 22. The movie is budgeted at $45 million-$50 million, with additional casting to be finalized. "Silent Hill" is based on the hugely successful Konami game in which Rose (Mitchell) desperately searches for her lost daughter in the mysterious, terrifying town of Silent Hill, where they are trapped. The screenplay was written by Roger Avary ("Pulp Fiction"). Hadida's Davis Films developed the film in association with Konami Corp.

Nintendo DS [12.03.2005] GameFront meldet...

A derelict stretch of downtown Colborne Street will star in a horror movie to be filmed here in April.
Called Centralia, the film is based on the popular video game, Silent Hill. The independent feature will use run-down, vacant facades between Brant Avenue and Queen Street to stand in for a ghost town, location manager Jonathan Matthews said Tuesday.
"We needed to find stores that we could transform into looking derelict and old, where we wouldn’t have to displace a business," Matthews said in a telephone interview from the production offices in Toronto. [...]
"We didn’t come to Brantford because there’s no economy here, but because there’s a look, an architecture and an atmosphere that we require to film."
In turn, the city is greeting Centralia with open arms.
"We are delighted to see them," Mayor Mike Hancock said Tuesday, after the city’s engineering and public works commitee approved temporary road closures for the filming.
However, Hancock and some councillors are concerned that the movie could promote a negative image of Brantford - something the city has worked hard to correct through redevelopment projects.
"It’s an embarrassment," Coun. Richard Carpenter said of the Colborne Street area to be filmed. "It’s not something we want to market and advertise to the rest of the world."
Council must still formally approve the road closures, as well as negotiate compensation for the use of city services and of special duty police officers.
Written permission from affected property owners is required, as well as a $2-million insurance policy insuring the city against any liability.
"They have said they are prepared to do whatever they need to satisfy the city’s concerns," said Wayne Wood, commissioner of engineering, public works, parks and recreation.
Centralia will pump a minimum of $25,000 a day into the city’s economy during filming, said Matthews: up to 120 people will be staying in local hotels, spending their money on food and other goods.
The movie’s budget is yet to be determined, as is casting, Matthews said.
While many other details are still to being finalized, such as exact dates, filming is set for a total of three to five days between April 11-29. [...]
Though location scouts have been in town over the past few weeks, checking out sites and talking to property owners and merchants, no details have been publicized until now. That’s because the Silent Hill games - there are four versions so far - have such a huge following on the Internet.
"We don’t want the wrong idea getting out about how the movie is being made," Matthews said.
Produced by Konami, a Japanese corporation, Silent Hill has sold more than four million copies worldwide. Fans appreciate its combination of suspense, plot twists and chilling atmosphere.
Centralia’s storyline is a "hodge podge" of the plots from Silent Hill I and II. It centres on a woman who, desperate to save her dying child, takes the girl to a faith healer in the town of Silent Hill. There, the mother "finds herself trapped in an alternate reality as she searches for her daughter in a dangerous world of demons." [...]

[15.02.2005] Produzent Don Carmoday enthüllt auf DonCarmody.com die Storyline... MEGA-SPOILER !!!
A woman desperate to save her dying child finds herself trapped in an alternate reality as she searches for her daughter in a dangerous world of demons.
Rose cannot accept the knowledge that her daughter Sharon is dying of a fatal disease. Over the protests of her husband, she flees with her child, intending to take the girl to a faith healer. On the way, she ends up driving through a portal in reality, which takes her to the eerie and deserted town of Silent Hill. Sharon disappears in Silent Hill, and Rose follows what she thinks is her daughter’s silhouette all over town. It’s soon clear the town is not like any place she’s ever been. It’s inhabited by a variety of creatures and a living darkness that descends and literally transforms everything it touches. The human inhabitants - the ones who are left - are trapped and fighting a losing battle against the Darkness.
Joined by a cop named Cybil, who has been sent to bring her and Sharon back, Rose searches for her little girl while learning the history of Silent Hill and that Sharon is just a pawn in a larger game. To save her daughter, Sharon makes a deal with a demon in the form of a little girl, and allows the forces of darkness to take the town and destroy those who tried to destroy the demon. In the end, she saves her daughter but at a high price.

My favorite Silent Hill fan, of the thousands that have emailed me, is the seemingly computer generated Julia Sandberg Hansson, who seems to have augmented herself to look like a character out of the game...to quite nice effect if you ask me. Now, I have no say in the casting process of the film -- that's all up to Christophe Gans and Samuel Hadida. But I think Julia, who's 21, has multi-colored eyes, is trained in advanced Kung-Fu, and is currently stalking the producers, is eye-opening evidence that Silent Hill fans aren't your normal plump prepubescent gamers. She lends a whole new urgency to "don't fuck it up." I'm rooting for you Julia! Here's hoping that at minimum you make it into the production as a scalpel slashing undead nurse (Gans, are you listening?)...

I'm sitting in the Air Canada Mapel Leaf Lounge, which is oddly identical to the Air France lounge, waiting for my flight to Toronto. Silent Hill is beginning preproduction, and I'm needed for some light script polishing on location. I must say, this film is crewing up quite nicely. There's Andrew Mason producing, Production Designer Carol Spier recreating the look of the game, Wendy Partridge weaving costumes, and Patrick Tatopolous creating all of the denizens of Silent Hill. It seems as though Samuel Hadida is giving Christophe all of the tools he needs to make a proper adaptation. More updates daily (and hopefully pictures)...

Avary's Domain has just made Vanity Fair's Daily Dose! I receive this glorious news as I am about to depart for an undisclosed location, to begin my rewrite on "Silent Hill" with Christophe Gans. My cameraphone will be in tow to document the process -- as will my trusty Panasonic DVX100A (for the documentary in the supplementary section). Samuel Hadida has rented a house in the hills where wayward filmmakers can come together to write and play videogames while being isolated from all the complications of daily life. I'm bringing my Xbox -- there had better be a giant display with more colors than the human eye can process when I arrive. For sure there's a pool -- probably a party -- definitely refreshments. With those necessary components in place we'll have a draft sometime early next week. [...]

[...] I hear Christophe Gans telling Akira Yamaoka "I will use all the original music -- of course -- I won't change it, it's perfect."

[22.10.2004] Blickpunkt:Film...

For those concerned about the speed writing on "Silent Hill, you need not fear. Let me explain, when I arrived in Paris a highly detailed treatment had been in the works for over a month by Christophe Gans and Nicholas Boukhrief. I spent three intensive weeks with Christophe, rewriting the treatment to perfection, and then Nicholas did another pass on it. Then, I sat down and over the next three weeks put together the first draft. Now, although we have something that resembles a finished script, with dialog and formatting and little details worked out -- it's still technically a pre-draft. I spent today with Christophe taking character notes -- examining what doesn't work. And there's plenty. Keep in mind, no script is a movie. It's a blueprint toward production...and the blueprints tend to change along the way. The reason we wrote this FAST is because it's a GO MOVIE. Christophe and his production team desperately need something to begin the boarding and budgeting process. They need to plan for the massive special effects in the film. They need to begin all of the preproduction that goes into making a movie -- they begin shooting in February, after all. So, although I'll be leaving Paris and going back home to my orange farm and cats, work on "Silent Hill" will continue. It's quite likely that writing will continue right up into shooting. So everybody relax. We're making a movie here, not just a script.

Silent Hill, Silent Hill, Silent Hill...my life is consumed by it. The soundtrack to Silent Hill 2, the graphic novel, fan art, and of course, the games. I'm mostly spending the evenings re-playing Silent Hill 2 (my favorite of the series) on my French PS2, and then watching various DVDs that Christophe suggests are similar to the Silent Hill feel. Then, every morning at 10AM, a car picks me up from my apartment in St.-Germain-des-Pres to deliver me to the palatial offices of Samuel Hadida (which we call KGB Central) where Christophe and I feverishly work alongside each other. We have the entire 4th Floor production suite to ourselves. Christophe is obsessed with all sorts of obscure Italian soundtracks, which we listen to (along with the Silent Hill 2 soundtrack and heavy doses of Serge Gainsbourg) while we write. We've had a game system brought into the office so that we can take breaks to play. Usually, around 1PM we go out for a typical French lunch, usually accompanied by a gathering of French cinephiles that seem to creep out of the woodwork. After two or more hours of heated discussions of who is the Godfather about, exactly, Pacino or Brando (or some other tangential topic, like which recent American directors are the cinematic descendents of Claude Lelouche), we wander back to the office and finish off some more pages. I've eaten more bread, and drank more nuclear coffee in the last 10 days than I have in the last year. By night, I'm back to my little apartment -- typically French, with beams in the ceiling and creaky wood floors -- to continue trolling the Silent Hill universe for hidden clues. This may just be the best writing experience I've ever had.
Okay, one thing: WOULD YOU FREAKING SILENT HILL FANS PLEASE STOP SENDING ME YOUR SCRIPTS! I delete them without reading them, and it's getting a little absurd. I mean, does everyone who plays this game write a script immediately after finishing?! And please, stop asking me if I'm as obsessed with this game as you are. The answer is, NO, I'm not. But Christophe Gans IS. I'm just writing down his interpretations and visions. I appreciate the concerns, and I'm happy to know what your favorite moments of the game are -- but please, relax a little. It's going to be a fantastic filmic experience -- Christophe is too obsessed with it for it not to be. Have faith.

Dark Aura Entertainment gave us a little more news on casting and which game the movie will be based on...
"We have come pretty close to deciding that the film will be tightly based on the first game. We have yet to narrow anything down such as scripts or screenplays or a director for that matter. For the most part we are definitely heavy into the brainstorrming process of pre-production. We definitley want to go with Depp as the lead however we havent ironed out any of the casting details either."-Dark Aura Entertainmnet

We at Dark Aura Entertainment couldnt be happier that we have been given the green llight to develop this project. We also believe that this will be a revolutionary film for two genres. The film based on video games and more importantly the modern horror film. We know what fans you all are of this game and we know it is crucial that we get it right and that is what we intend to do. We will update you shortly when our site is up and running . Thank you for your continued support and please submit any suggestions.
