[...] "Prince of Persia" debuted the first trailer (which, though Bruckheimer claimed wasn't complete, seemed ready to go effects-wise). The trailer featured quite a bit of Jake Gyllenhaal as Prince Dastan and explained the basic plot: there is a magical dagger that offers the bearer the power to travel through time. Ben Kingsley (as the evil Nizam) wants to steal it and use it it to destroy the world, so Dastan and Tamina (Gemma Arterton) have to take it to "the secret guardian temple" where it can be safe. There's quite a bit of fast cutting and flirting between Dastan and Tamina. At one point, they appear to be in disguise as servants and she asks if he's carrying the dagger. He tells her that she'll have to do a pretty thorough search to find it. [...]

[...] As Dastan, Gyllenhaal is charged with battling the shadowy cult of assassins The Hanssansin, a heroic role that the newly-buff leading man claims says him to the role. "I'm always fascinated with these kinds of stories of the hero's journey," Gyllenhaal told us. "You're playing a legitimate hero, you know? I think it's an honour to do that."
Newell, meanwhile, says there's much more to Prince Of Persia than Gyllenhaal roaming the sixth century with his top off. "This isn't just kind of kiss kiss, bang bang," stressed the Four Weddings And A Funeral director. "It's like a superheated, super-actioned Noah story. It's what happens when the gods get angry and so fed up with humans they want to rub them out and start all over again."
But Newell's promising that his leading man will have the tools to meet all this divine fury blow-for-blow. "There's this wonderful line - and I can't remember where this comes from - which says, 'So long as there is just one man, you can't kill us all...'" [...]

In the fantasy adventure, Gyllenhaal will play Dastan, a young prince in sixth century Persia who must join forces with Tamina (Arterton), a feisty and exotic princess, to prevent a villainous nobleman from possessing the Sands of Time, a gift from the gods that can reverse time and allow its possessor to rule the world.
Doug Miro & Carlo Bernard, Jordan Mechner and Boaz Yakin wrote the script, which is based on the many games created by Jordan Mechner.
Bruckheimer is producing, while Mike Stenson, Chad Oman and Patrick McCormick are exec producing.
Production is set to start in July.
Gyllenhaal will next appear in Jim Sheridan's "Brothers" with Tobey Maguire. He is repped by CAA and Management 360.

Brit helmer Mike Newell will lens action adventure pic "Prince of Persia: Sands of Time" in Morocco for producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney. Epic project is a live-action feature based on the videogame. "Prince of Persia" has a script by Jeffrey Nachmanoff ("The Day After Tomorrow") and vidgame creator Jordan Mechner. The vidgame spawned six installments and numerous spin-offs, boosting Disney execs’ hopes for a lucrative new tentpole.
Choice of Morocco as a shooting location will be a boost for the North African country’s film biz.
Ridley Scott’s "Body of Lies" and Paul Greengrass’ untitled Iraq war thriller both recently wrapped significant shoots there.
"Producers are always looking for cheap places to shoot and Morocco is one of them," said Dune Films’ Jimmy Abounouom, who is repping the Moroccan shoot for Disney.
Dune execs previously handled the Moroccan shoots of Tom Hanks starrer "Charlie Wilson’s War" and Kimberly Peirce’s "Stop-Loss."
"Prince of Persia" will also lens in Blighty’s Pinewood Shepperton studios. Project is in pre-production. Abounouom told Variety he expects the Moroccan section of the shoot to start in mid-June, labor wrangles notwithstanding.

[23.12.2007] OWF meldet...
If we are to see a PRINCE OF PERSIA movie next year, it’s going to rely on the fate of TWO Hollywood strikes. First of all as we speculated a while back, Disney have not turned in their script for the feature as it’s no where near finished and with the WGA strike, they haven’t been able to work on it and nor will they be able to until a deal is reached.
This may not be for months and months.
When the strike is finally resolved, work will hastly begin on the script and production will need to begin almost immediately as they will only have till the end of June to complete filming, or at the very least before it’s shut down for several weeks because of the actor’s strike.
And of course they need to find a leading man and the rest of the cast before then.
HARRY POTTER and DONNIE BRASCO director Mike Newell will helm the feature for Disney which is far more assuring than when Michael Bay’s name was floating around the project. [...]

Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer have made an offer to Mike Newell to direct "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time," a live-action feature based on the videogame.
Newell, who last ventured into franchise fare with "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," met execs at the studio to discuss the project this week, and negotiations are expected to begin shortly.
The vidgame has spawned six installments and several spinoffs, prompting studio hopes that the project will have tentpole potential.
"Prince of Persia" has a script by Jeffrey Nachmanoff ("The Day After Tomorrow") and vidgame creator Jordan Mechner.Disney, whose topper, Oren Aviv, will put as many as seven films in production between now and March, recently decided not to race to get "Prince of Persia" into production until labor issues are resolved.
Newell most recently helmed "Love in the Time of Cholera."

Jerry Bruckheimer has been busy as of late with his Pirates franchise and his countless hit TV shows but still he has been working hard to get other film franchises off the ground. The IESB can exclusively report that his upcoming film, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, has found a director and a release date!
So I am sure you are wondering by now who Jerry has tapped to direct the adaptation of the best selling video game, right?
Bruckheimer has teamed up with him in the past to bring you Bad Boys I and II, The Rock, Pearl Harbor and Armageddon. Yes, that’s right, Michael Bay is directing Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time for a Summer ’09 release.
The IESB was able to confirm with Disney Studios that they are hopeful that Michael Bay will indeed direct the picture right after he is done with this Summer’s blockbuster, Transformers.
You might remember a couple of years ago when we confirmed that Bay was behind Transformers just as he was finishing The Island. So now, just as he is finishing up Transformers, we are announcing that he will in fact be behind Bruckheimer’s Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.
This feature film adaptation is "based on the video game, which follows an adventurous prince who teams up with a rival princess to stop an angry ruler from unleashing a sandstorm that could destroy the world."
The original creator of the game, Jordan Mechner, has said that "Rather than do a straight beat-for-beat adaptation of the new videogame, we're taking some cool elements from the game and using them to craft a new story - much as 'Pirates' [of the Caribbean] did with the theme park ride."
Mechner wrote the first draft of the screenplay for the feature film with subsequent drafts by Jeffrey Nachmanoff. [...]

[02.03.2007] Bei BadTaste.it und CS! gibt es Production Artwork... Und JoBlo kommentiert...
[...] Hollywood tried getting a movie on the ground that would've been released last year but, as you might have guessed, that never happened. John August's script was jettisoned and now it looks like Disney is ready to give in the ole Jerry Bruckheimer treatment. The movie is scheduled to be the studio's big 2008 blockbuster and today, courtesy of Italian site Bad Taste, we have some look at production art. Now my Italian isn't very sharp but it would seem these guys aren't 100% they were created for the movie exclusively but they were found in some Disney investor's brochure advertising the movie. It certainly has the scope of something that Bruckheimer would look to put in one of his movies. [...]

[24.02.2007] Bei Jim Hill Media meldet...
[...] the magic word on the Disney lot is "franchise." And to be honest, Mouse House managers don't like greenlighting any new projects for the studio unless these potential productions naturally lend themselves to a series of follow-up films.
This is why Walt Disney Pictures -- in conjunction with Jerry Bruckheimer Films -- is now gearing up to put a "Prince of Persia" movie into production. Because it's thought that a film based on this hugely popular series of Ubisoft Entertainment games (Which -- in theory -- will be Disney's big action-adventure release for the Summer of 2008) could then lead to a new hit series of movies for the studio. [...]

Der Titel basiert auf Prince of Persia The Two Thrones.

The Walt Disney Co. has recruited The Day After Tomorrow screenwriter Jeffrey Nachmanoff to write three projects at the studio, including two for studio-based Jerry Bruckheimer Films, says Variety.
Nachmanoff is doing scripting overhauls on Bruckheimer's adaptation of the Ubisoft videogame "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" and Unnatural History as well as the LivePlanet-produced Liberty.
Prince of Persia tells the story of an adventurous prince who uncovers a dangerous artifact in a remote mountain kingdom and, with the help of an enemy princess, must stop a despot from unleashing a sandstorm that could destroy all mankind. [...]

[04.03.2004] CS! meldet...
Jerry Bruckheimer Films is in talks to acquire the feature film rights to best-selling video game Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. The project is being earmarked as a feature film for Disney, says Variety. The deal includes a script being written by game creator Jordan Mechner. John August is executive producing and supervising Mechner on the script.
The game is set in medieval Persia, Earth's mightiest and most mysterious kingdom, where a king and his son defeat the powerful Maharajah and kidnap his daughter, looting his palace of priceless treasure, including an extravagant hourglass, and a mysterious dagger.
What the Prince does not realize, is that these two objects can turn their possessor into an immortal god, and give him control over time itself. Tricked by a dying Vizier bent on harnessing this terrible magic for himself, the Prince releases the sands of time, destroying a kingdom and turning its populace into ferocious demons. Only the Prince, the Vizier, and Princess Farah, the kidnapped daughter of the Maharajah, remain unchanged. Now, it is up to the young Prince of Persia to call upon every resource and ounce of courage he possesses to save his kingdom and redeem his fatal mistake.
Mechner says Bruckheimer's "Pirates of the Caribbean" was a touchstone for the adaptation. "Rather than do a straight beat-for-beat adaptation of the new videogame, we're taking some cool elements from the game and using them to craft a new story -- much as 'Pirates' did with the theme park ride."
