[...] I wish I saw the film that Richard Corliss, Roger Ebert, Massawyrm, Nordling and others saw. Instead, I saw one of the most flawed and flimsy films in Spielberg’s career. As always, he captures spectacle with a flair few can dream of, only to place it in a film that left so much to be desired.

[21.06.2002] Die FAZ hat eine Kritik veröffentlicht...

[20.06.2002] Bei AICN gibt es eine Kritik von Alexandra DuPont...
[...] Suffice to say, the movie is an utterly immersive, seemingly effortless, wildly complex futuristic mystery -- one with a tight storyline, some surprising twists, a dense thicket of well-performed really tiny parts, and more than a dash of social commentary, moral quandary, and creepy absurdity. It is, I'd dare say, director Steven Spielberg's best and most cohesive film in 20 years -- other than maybe Schindler's List -- showcasing a surprising restraint and maturity, a light, throwaway touch, and a firm grasp of the tenets of Kafkaesque Big Issue Sci-Fi that proves The Beard was paying attention while he sat at Kubrick's footstool for a couple of years. [...]

[...] Overall? This is an enjoyable movie with an outstanding vision of the future, but the holes in the plot diminish the credibility of the story and the slapstick moments almost serve to defile the integrity of the greater whole. Cruise is Cruise (again) and in terms of direction and pacing, this is very accomplished stuff. It's like the Spielberg that brought us AI is taking on the BLADE RUNNER era Ridley Scott and he definitely gives a good account of himself.
Good stuff, far more challenging than the average blockbuster, and you find yourself coming out of the theatre pondering and thoughtful as opposed to the elation you may have felt after ATTACK OF THE CLONES or SPIDER-MAN.

[17.06.2002] Houston Chronicle sprach mit Steven Spielberg über "MR", u.a. über den Einsatz von CGI...
[...] Spielberg considers CG "just another tool -- a means to an end. It shouldn't be an end itself.
"Besides, it dulls the impact if every single scene has something so extraordinary you can't top yourself. We have to exact a whole new discipline -- to temper our enthusiasm and say how much is enough." [...]

[...] As far as the acting in the film, Cruise gives a performance that sparkles on may levels. He is driven, ambitious, angry, and compassionate in his motives. Playing both the hunter and the hunted, Cruise keeps you involved every step of the way. Also, in a welcome return, Max von Sydow is electric in his performance as the head of the Precrime division. Honestly, both actors are top notch. Another bright spot of the movie is the eerie, haunting performance given by Samantha Morton as one of the precogs that let the law see into the future.
Back to Spielberg. The look of this film is fantastic. By combining excellent art direction and daring cinematography, Spielberg has given a glimpse of the future that both wonderous and very real. This future lives and breathes. Every gadget works and serves a purpose. Every gimmick both wows and propels the story. Alex McDowell and Januscz Kaminski both deserve to be recognized when award season comes about.
To sum it up, Minority Report is a winner. Those alienated by A.I. are bound to think differently about this film. And those who embraced it, will relish Minority Report even more. Spielberg has hit a home run.

[...] Overall, Minority Report left me feeling dazed. Like Artificial Intelligence, it doesn't have the criteria to be a major Summer box-office winner. Some will be completely enthralled by the story, but mostly I fear others will feel disappointed that the film plays more like a dragged-out sci-fi version of "The Fugitive". This is certainly not amongst Spielberg's greatest achievements...

[16.05.2002] Die DreamWorks SKG Fansite zeigt neue Bilder...

[08.05.2002] Auf der DreamWorks SKG Fansite gibt es ein kurzes Interview mit Drehbuchautor Jon Cohen...
1. You co-wrote the script with Scott. How was it like working with him?
We did not physically write together, because we are not a writing team. He was hired after me. I've come to know Scott during this long process, and he is truly a great guy, and while it is not a joy to be rewritten, somehow he made it so.
2. How do you think Minority Report is similar and different to A.I.?
Yikes. Totally different. MR is essentially a multi-layered murder mystery, a treatise on a fearsome police division, and a damn propulsive and cool sci fi actioner. It's similar to A.I. only in that it takes place in the future. That's all, period. MR is very emotional and visceral and thought provoking. Very consitent in its worrisome look at the future. I saw that last trailer recently, and am excited as hell. Can't wait to see what those little spiders do, and hell, I'm the one who invented them!
3. Have you seen parts of the film? If so...does the word WOW describe it?
Double WOW with a cherry on top.

[04.03.2002] Bei Dark Horizons gibt es ein negatives Script-Review... Vorsicht SPOILER !!!
MINORITY REPORT is not a very clever script. In the future fo 2025, three psychics can predict with 100 percent accuracy every homocide in America and Tom Cruise plays the chief of police of the guys who bust the would-be killers. Society has returned to a quasi-fifties mode, think Pleasantville, with some occasional hi-tech gizmos giving away that we’re in the future. One day, the police receives a CD of the psychics' latest report (as they always do) and lo and behold, we see Tom Cruise killing his second-in-command guy. Before you can say "Run, Tom! Run!", Cruise disappears and goes incognito in order to track down the dudes who framed him. Again, the plot is spiced up with some hi-tech gizmos such as an eye transplant and an injection which relaxes the face muscles so the user’s face becomes unrecognizable to potential bad guys. These toys let Cruise run around town and figure out what is going on. [...] The final standoff is one of the worst I’ve ever read. Stupid. A silly action film that hides behind some lame First Amendment excuse.

How’s this for a prediction: I think this will be Spielberg’s second-best film (after SCHINDLER’S LIST, which he will never top) and will erase the memories of INDY JONES, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS and E.T. (which always creeped me out, anyway).
[...] For all the cool gadgets and action scenes in MR, the real show will be watching Tom Cruise lost and delirious over the death of his son. Tom has always been an actor first and a superstar second, and this is a perfect hybrid of just that.
Scott Frank brilliant turned what could have been a boring sci-fi spectacle into an enchanting tale of loss, hope and redemption.
This, obviously, will be a hit like no other (Cruise was able to power the beaten-down VANILLA SKY to over one hundred million dollars). But I’ll be in line for an entirely different reason. And once you see it I think you’ll understand why.

[...] "I play the Attorney General. I suspect I appear intermittently throughout the film." [...] "I didn't work with Tom Cruise except for a wide shot on the very last day. Our only personal contact is when he bid me farewell. I did work with Max von Sydow who has long been a favorite actor of mine, and learned a great deal from the experience".

"Minority Report"...
[...] "If I had to make a blend, I would say it's The Maltese Falcon meets Raiders of the Lost Ark, with just a touch of madness," says Spielberg, adding that Report's 477 special-effects shots are his most since Close Encounters of the Third Kind 25 years ago. Spielberg shot Report last summer, as his Stanley Kubrick homage A.I. was befuddling audiences and critics. Does he feel any pressure to bounce back strong? Nope. "I feel like I've given my life over to pleasing audiences, and I feel like it's my time to start pleasing myself," he says. "I'm not motivated to make records fall. if that interested me, I would have said yes to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. The lamppost knew that film was going to light the world on fire!" [...]

They had a futuristic car that was suposed to be a Lexus. They towed the car behind a truck for a driving scene. [...]"

[...] No autograph hounds approached the famous director as he browsed the shelves, waiting to start shooting a car scene across the street. There was none of the excitement that would sweep through the three dozen or so spectators outside the store a short while later, when actor Tom Cruise arrived for work. [...]
Although equipment and members of the crew had been across the street for more than a hour, and many spectators had cell phones, few additional people showed up. Gloucester deputy sheriffs kept traffic moving on the narrow road as well as they could. Few drivers seemed inclined to stop and watch.
The fancy red car being used for the scene was towed down the road with an actor or actors inside -- much of the preparation was done behind a large white screen. At one point, a production assistant warned spectators that unless they put their cameras away, the scene would be filmed elsewhere. Another time, a crew member asked for quiet among the crowd. [...]
When Cruise lifted himself onto the cooler Wednesday, he at first appeared to have scratches all over his skin. Shirley Hudgins looked close, however, and reported the scratches were just makeup.
The movie company has been highly secretive about its plans in Gloucester. Some scenes were shot at the county's Beaverdam Park this week, and the park will probably be closed to the public through Friday. But no one is revealing where - or if - Spielberg and Cruise will appear again in a public setting. [...]

[21.06.2001] Die Daily Press berichtet über die Dreharbeiten...
[...] The film crew installed yellow "MS503" directional signs along roads, and "people figured out what the MS signs were in about 30 minutes," Whitley said. They assume it means "movie scene No. 503." [...]

[20.06.2001] Die Daily Press berichtet über den Stand der Dreharbeiten...
[...] Cruise and Steven Spielberg, in town under several layers of secrecy to film scenes for the upcoming sci-fi thriller "Minority Report," were expected to limit their shooting to a private Ware Neck residence that was rented because of its remote location. But the Oscar-winning director, the A-list star and their film crew apparently have spent the past two days shooting scenes in Beaverdam Park -- which was closed to the public with the explanation that it was undergoing construction and repair work. [...]
Shooting is expected to wrap up in Gloucester by the end of the week.
