CS! berichtet über die US-Kinocharts... [...] Despite horrid reviews, M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender (Paramount) defied most if not all expectations to gross $70.5 million over its first five days, making it Shyamalan's biggest opening since The Village. It opened on Thursday with $16.3 million, then added another estimated $53.2 million over the four-day weekend, averaging $16.7 thousand per venue. [...]

Bei SHH! gibt es ein Interview mit dem Regisseur M. Night Shyamalan... Und bei Seven Days a Week gibt es eine Kritik zum Film... [...] this movie was very rushed and to many liberties of the source material were taken. Aesthetically it was very beautiful and well done and some of the characters were casted ok. There wasn’t one character who hit it dead on but did an OK job overall. My favorites being Dev Patel (Prince Zuko) and Noah Ringer (Aang), I give it 3 stars for awesome visuals, ok acting, and mediocre story telling when the source material had everything lined out without needing to re-imagine anything. Variety.com meldet... Paramount is looking to ignite the July 4th box office with bigger fireworks by converting M. Night Shyamalan's kid pic "The Last Airbender" to 3D. Studio is keeping the same release date of July 2.
Across Hollywood, studio toppers are furiously working to see what films they can convert. Only hours before Par's announcement, Sony announced it was converting "Green Hornet" and pushing the film's release back from Dec. 22 to Jan. 14.
It turns out Par has been quietly working with a company called Stereo D for more than a year on conversion testing, including on library titles. Three months ago, Stereo D -- which did some work on "Avatar" -- began showing Shyamalan converted footage of "Airbender."
Shyamalan was ultimately satisfied, and signed onto the conversion, which cost between $5 million and $10 million, according to insiders.
"We thought their work was compelling. When was saw how the 'Airbender' tests were developing, we said, 'now let's see if you can impress Night.' That's why we don't have to make any changes to the schedule. We just wanted to make sure we could deliver a great experience before we made the commitment," Paramount vice chair Rob Moore said.
Moore said converting 2D films to 3D is a challenge, and that Par has "found its team" in Stereo D.
From a competitive standpoint, "Airbender" is the only new 3D title to play over the lucrative July 4 frame. "Airbender" opens two weeks after Disney/Pixar's "Toy Story 3" bows on June 18.
Conversion continues to raise controversy, with some contending that a glut of converted titles could cheapen the new technology.

CS! meldet... Aasif Mandvi, Shaun Toub and Cliff Curtis have joined the cast of M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender for Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies. Shyamalan, Sam Mercer and Frank Marshall are producing with principal photography to begin mid-March 2009.
They join a cast headed by Noah Ringer, who plays the title role, Nicola Peltz, who plays the Waterbender Katara, Jackson Rathbone, in the role of Katara's brother Sokka, and Dev Patel, who plays Prince Zuko, prince of the Fire Nation.
Mandvi is set to play the role of Commander Zhao, an ambitious and hot-tempered Fire Nation commander. A regular correspondent on Comedy Central's hit show, "The Daily Show," Mandvi is repped by Endeavor and Lillian LaSalle at Sweet 180 Management. He will next be seen opposite Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds in Disney's The Proposal, and recently wrapped production on 7 to the Palace, his feature co-writing debut in which he also stars.
Toub, last seen in Iron Man and The Kite Runner, is cast as Uncle Iroh, the retired Fire Nation general and devoted surrogate parent to Dev Patel's character Zuko. He is represented by Abrams Artists Agency.
Curtis is set to play the ruthless ruler Fire Lord Ozai. Represented by Abrams Artists Agency, he most recently appeared in Crossing Over with Harrison Ford and will next appear in the Paramount film A Thousand Words with Eddie Murphy.
In addition, Keong Sim has been cast in the role of Earthbending Father. He is represented by Judy Boals in New York.
Air, Water, Earth, Fire. Four nations tied by destiny when the Fire Nation launches a brutal war against the others. A century has passed with no hope in sight to change the path of this destruction. Caught between combat and courage, Aang (Noah Ringer) discovers he is the lone Avatar with the power to manipulate all four elements. Aang teams with Katara (Nicola Peltz), a Waterbender, and her brother, Sokka (Jackson Rathbone), to restore balance to their war-torn world.
Based on the hugely successful Nickelodeon animated TV series, the live-action feature film The Last Airbender is the opening chapter in Aang's struggle to survive.

Variety.com meldet... "Slumdog Millionaire" star Dev Patel has joined the cast of M. Night Shyamalan's "The Last Airbender," the Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Films live-actioner based on a Nick TV series.
Patel will be featured alongside newcomer Noah Ringer, Nicola Peltz, Jackson Rathbone and Jessica Jade Andres. Production begins in mid-March in Greenland.
In casting Patel and Ringer, a director accustomed to delivering plot twists to audiences got some surprises of his own. Ringer is a complete unknown who was tapped for the title role off an Internet audition. Patel, meanwhile, steps into a role that Jesse McCartney had all but locked up until the actor's second career as a musician got in the way.
"Jesse had tour dates that conflicted with a boot camp I always hold on my films, and where the actors here have to train for martial arts," Shyamalan said.
Patel was "already one of the guys I was interested in. Then I saw 'Slumdog Millionaire,' and the kid just grew in my eyes," he said.
Tyro thesp Ringer will play Aang, the film's lead, who is the last of a race of people who can manipulate the elements of air.
Ringer, a 12-year-old from Texas, landed the part after demonstrating his martial arts skills in an Internet vid that he posted to a website Shyamalan set up for open virtual auditions.
Patel will play Zuko, a member of the Fire Nation. Peltz plays the Water Tribe rep Katara, while Andres is the Earth Kingdom's representative, Suki.
While McCartney was knocked out by scheduling, Rathbone managed to work around a conflict with "New Moon," where he will reprise his role as a bloodsucker from "Twilight."
Paramount is set to release "Airbender on July 2, 2010.
Shyamalan said he is planning a three-picture story arc.

Wie EW.com meldet, scheint die Besetzung festzustehen... M. Night Shyamalan has found the cast for The Last Airbender, his upcoming live-action film based on the popular anime-inspired Nickelodeon series. The youthful group is mostly filled with unknowns who are likely to be household names by the time Paramount opens the first in its potential three-film franchise in July 2010. After an open casting call in Texas, Shyamalan discovered karate star Noah Ringer and offered him the part of Airbender's 12-year old hero, Aang, an Avatar with superpowers who must stop the Fire Nation from destroying the world. Twilight's Jackson Rathbone has been asked to play Aang's pal Sokka, while Nicola Peltz (Deck the Halls) will star as his sister Katara. Genial singer Jesse McCartney, meanwhile, is negotiating to play against type in the role of the Fire Nation's evil prince Zuko.
