Walt Disney Animation Studios has breathed new life into King of the Elves and has hired Michael Markowitz (Horrible Bosses) to pen the newest version of the script. The film is an adaptation of a Philip K. Dick short story about "a band of elves and one dwarf living in the Mississippi Delta who tap a human as their king after he saves them from an evil troll." The project is being overseen by Chris Williams, co-director and writer of Bolt.
Elves was initially set for a 2012 release with Brother Bear's Aaron Blaise and Robert Walker, but when Pixar's John Lasseter took over animation in 2006 it went back into development. This project has been around since 2008, and was even unveiled alongside Wall-E as an upcoming film on the Disney schedule. This should be the next big film on the horizon for 2013 after Monsters University opens next summer.
Markowitz has also written for TV, with shows like Becker, In-Laws, It's All Relative and Bob Patterson, on which he also served as a supervising producer. [...]

[09.04.2008] Quint von AICN berichtet von einer Disney-Präsentation in NY...
[...] WALT DISNEY’S KING OF THE ELVES, based on the Philip K. Dick story about a gas station attendant who receives a knock on the door one rainy night. It’s a group of elves. Small, maybe a foot tall each. They are all green, with leaves and foliage growing off of them.
They beg him for shelter from the storm. Despite his better judgment he allows them to stay and as reward he is made king of the Elves.
Directed by Bob Walker and Aaron Blaise. It’s pretty far out from release, of course, but they showed some art. The elves I described a little above. The art was very painterly and the idea is that these little green buggers live in modern day Mississippi and have been undiscovered based on their appearance. With the leaves growing on their bodies if a human enters their domain they can just ruffle their foliage, duck their heads down and be completely undetectable.
There aren’t just small creatures in the forests. We saw art of huge moss covered man-like tree giants.
There was no word on if it’ll be traditional animation or not. I’d assume CG animation [...]
