[15.02.2010] CS! zitiert aus einem Interview mit der Drehbuchautorin Laeta Kalogridis , die für Steven Spielberg und DreamWorks die Realverfilmung schreibt...
[...] I've got "Ghost in the Shell," which is an adaptation of another manga and anime with DreamWorks and Steven's producing that and I'm hoping that the draft will come in pretty soon and I'm hoping he'll like it. DreamWorks had the material and I have loved it for years and years and years. They contacted me about it when they found out that I was interested. I mean, there's just no other property quite like it. It could actually be three two-hour movies, which is what I would vote for, but it's the seminal cyberpunk text as something like "Neuromancer." I mean, it really just is, and there's nothing else like it. [...]

[25.10.2009] Variety.com meldet...
DreamWorks has tapped scribe Laeta Kalogridis to adapt the Japanese manga property "Ghost in the Shell."
DreamWorks is making the futuristic police thriller as a 3D live-action film.
Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Steven Paul of Seaside Entertainment are attached to produce and originally brought the project to DreamWorks.
Created by Masamune Shirow, "Ghost in the Shell" was first published in 1989. It went on to generate two more manga editions, three anime film adaptations and an anime TV series. The second anime film, "Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence," was released in the U.S. by DreamWorks in 2004.
Jamie Moss was the original writer hired when DreamWorks bought the property last year.
Kalogridis wrote and exec produced Martin Scorsese's upcoming thriller "Shutter Island," which stars Leonardo DiCaprio.

Universal and Sony were also chasing "Ghost in the Shell," but Steven Spielberg took personal interest in the property and made it happen at DreamWorks.
"'Ghost in the Shell' is one of my favorite stories," Spielberg said. "It's a genre that has arrived, and we enthusiastically welcome it to DreamWorks."

[24.09.2004] Bei AICN gibt es eine Kritik von Harry Knowles...
I love Oshii’s work. It seems most don’t. He doesn’t write, draw or direct simple genre efforts. He isn’t interested in simple straight forward stories. He’s a cinematic neuromancer jacking out reel after reel of 24fps data straight into our eyes and ears. He remembers tomorrow for us, and remembers it greater detail than our past is to us. Oshii doesn’t walk the same plane of existence as us, reading an interview with him, is like reading an interview with Yoda. He speaks in logic circles regarding the higher evolutionary development of mankind, with a 20/20 hindsight on that which most of thinks will never be here, but that he’s apparently already lived through, and that I believe in. It’s just creepy as hell watching this stuff, cuz I’m not looking at "Commercial Product," I’m looking at a man’s vision of the evolutionary future of mankind. And as I read about abandoned Soviet Moon bases and wet-worked jacked in monkeys and ROBOTS... I begin to wonder, how can any of us pretend to know for certain that Oshii isn’t just visiting us from a better tomorrow giving us a glimpse of where we’re destined to follow. His films are musings on us. The characters don’t speak like us, because their brains are not like our brains. They’ve been enhanced. So when they speak in a series of literati quotes that most of us could only dream of having in the recall buttons of our minds, realize... these characters have those capabilities. They have iPods inside their skulls that remember things for them wholesale. Is this great entertainment? For me, absolutely. Is it art? Of the highest caliber, most certainly. It is better than we deserve.

[11.09.2004] Bei AICN gibt es eine positive Kritik zu GITS2...
[...] Not only is it the most beautiful anime ever, it's the first cyberpunk film whose visuals can match grand-daddy Blade Runner's. It's that sumptuous to look at, from the opening shot to the closing. The CG and hand-drawn still aren't seamless, mind you, but the sense of disconnect between the two dovetails so nicely with the film's themes it can't not be intentional.
And what are those themes? I was afraid you'd ask that. While the look of GITS II makes you try and come up with new synonyms for 'gob-smacked', the plot is barely coherent. Bits of the first film, Phil Dick and William Gibson are tossed in a blender and pureed, essentially. Besides, it's all really just an excuse to muse about humanity and identity, in a very long-winded fashion.
(Bonus points though for the constant barrage of quotes every character pulls out of their... external memory at will. I know some folks in the audience thought it was a stupid conceit, but in a world where everyone has instant access to every classic piece of writing from Milton to Confucius, why would you ever use your own sad little phrases?)
Who really cares though? The fight scenes are sudden, brutal and dazzling. The mind games are trippy. And there's a very real argument to be made that humanity evolved eyesight just so it could eventually watch this movie.
Ghost in the Shell II is an incredible piece of art. It's not to be missed. [...]

[26.08.2004] Bei AICN gibt es eine eher negative Kritik zu GITS2...

[19.06.2004] Bei AICN gibt es eine positive Kritik zu GITS2, der beim Seattle International Film Festival gezeigt wurde...
[...] Considering that the first ‘Ghost’ was so influential to ‘The Matrix,’ it’s interesting to watch the sequel, which is coming out in the shadow of the two monstrous ‘Matrix’ sequels. I had a bit of trepidation going in, wondering if this could work as well as the first. Thankfully, this appears to be everything that ‘Reloaded/Revolutions’ wasn’t. As such, I’m pretty sure I loved this movie, although I would probably need another 20 or so viewings to confirm that (I admit that by the end I was kinda exhausted and was just trying to get through the rest of the movie without my overworked brain exploding from an apparent philosophically-induced bout of Kopfgeschlagen).
From the first scene it’s evident that this is another glorious product of director Mamoru Oshii. Though there is much use of CG this time around, it’s never distracting, only enhancing the vivid scenery unfolding throughout. And Kenji Kawai offers up another brilliant and emotive score. But as rich as the visuals and music are, the story is where this movie excels. It’s deep and complicated and confusing as all hell, but in a good way. The dialog is smart, making heavy usage of quotes from everyone from Milton to Confucius, but it’s never convoluted. It weaves itself in every possible direction, but the message never gets lost in the discourse. We can try all we want to create a reasonable facsimile of life, but we’ll never succeed, because the best we can do is perfection. One character quips that perfection is for "dolls and deities," for those either devoid of consciousness or hyperconscious. We can create a perfect doll, but we can never reproduce life because life is all about imperfection. This movie is about our glorious failures, and it is those failures that ultimately give us our innocence. [...]

[25.04.2004] IGN FilmForce meldet...
Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence by Japanese filmmaker Mamoru Oshii has been invited to compete for this year's Palme D'or at the Cannes Film Festival. The nomination of Innocence is significant, as it marks the first time an anime (Japanese animation) film has ever contended for the coveted prize.
"I am very grateful to the Cannes Film Festival for honoring me and my film in this way," says Oshii. "I am proud to be in the company of all the nominees. The inclusion of Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence is further recognition of Japanese animation - anime - as an important movie genre, standing alongside all other genres."
In addition to be the first anime contender, Innocence is just the sixth animated film of any kind to compete. [...]
Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence opened in Japan in March, and it will be distributed in North America by DreamWorks SKG. No release date has been announced yet, but it's expected to be released in late summer 2004.
