[14.12.2008] sprach mit dem Regisseur Darren Aronofsky...
[...] Aronofsky said that he has completed a new cut of his philosophical SF art film The Fountain, which he hopes Warner Brothers will allow him to release. He dubs it a "redux" rather than a recut.
"It's something more for fans," Aronofsky said. "I worked on the film for six years, and it went through a lot of versions. There was one version that was much closer to one of the scripts that we had, and we chose between which way we would go with it. They both are interesting, so I always was curious for myself to see what that alternative version would be."
The theatrical cut of the film divided audiences, provoking hostile reactions at film festivals. Of the new cut, Aronofsky said, "It's very similar but looking at a few things in a few different ways, and it answers a few questions for people and raises some new questions in other ways, so it's kind of cool."
[...] Aronofsky hopes The Fountain's fans will encourage Warner to release his alternate cut.

[25.11.2006] Bei AICN gibt es eine Kritik von Harry Knowles...
[...] This is one of the monumental films of the year. I just have a very concise take on the material. I could argue points of view and alternative takes on the film for days, and I have. This film is Aronofsky’s very best film to date, and to date he has been brilliant. The visual effects are brilliant. But make no mistake about it, to me, this is no more Science Fiction - than it is Historical Fantasy. This is a Drama about two people in love dealing with one of them dying - each in their own way - one through science, the other through fantasy. Two belief systems. Each keeping them sane, through the maddening frustration of life. We never have as much as we want, and we never have enough time to love who we love as much as we love them. It is a brilliant film.

[14.10.2006] Bei AICN gibt es eine positive Kritik von Primevortex...
[...] This is, without a doubt, one of if not the best piece of work Jackman has done. To watch him carry this film is pure pleasure. I can never again see him only as Wolvie anymore. Rachel Weisz is stunning as always but for me she could have been better. Mind you, it’s Jackman we are watching mostly and he gets the best scenes. A surprise was seeing Ellen Burstyn in this film. I didn’t know she was in it. Burstyn is good with the short amount of work given to her here. As is, Ethan Suplee and Sean Patrick Thomas.
There isn’t enough to gush about this movie. The cinematography, at times is breathtaking and the score by Kronos Quartet is haunting. Clint Mansell deserves top nods though it isn’t Requiem quality. [...]

[29.09.2006] Bei AICN gibt es eine negative Kritik von Copernicus...
[...] hope you don't try to sit through this movie, but I know you will because to geeks the intersection of Hugh Jackman and rocks in space is like a cash-spending mandate from God Suckers. I warned you!

[05.09.2006] Bei gibt es eine Kritik (8/10)...
[...] The film looks absolutely splendid, the actors are all top-notch, the score and cinematography should win awards, and ultimately, the film’s message is a deep and life-affirming journey, with science-fiction, love and the fountain of life all joining the big-screen party. [...]

[04.09.2006] Bei AICN gibt es eine Kritik von Moriarty...

[04.05.2006] Bei AICN gibt es Kritiken zu einer Testvorführung...
[...] This is a movie that cannot be watched passively, you’ve got to pay attention, and probably will need to see it at least twice to get it all. Many people seemed to leave the screening saying "what the hell happened." Matthew Libatique and Clint Mansell again are on board for cinematography and score, both of which are by far the best aspects of the film. At any rate, for those that like thought provoking movies with questions that aren’t easily answered, this movie is for you. [...]

[31.03.2006] Bei AICN und Moviehole gibt es Kritiken zu einer Testvorführung in Los Angeles...
[...] Both Weisz and Jackman's interaction here is brilliant and emotionally powerful. Their emotion so real that its raw and you end up crying with the both of them at one scene of the film because of how much you care about them and end up grieving for the both of them as well.
It was a great film, probably one of the best films i have seen in years. [...]

Concurrently, Pitt has stepped away from "The Fountain," another Warner Bros. Pictures film; production on that project will be postponed. Emphasized Robinov, "Although we are disappointed not to be moving forward with 'The Fountain' right now, we remain committed to working with the film's director, Darren Aronofsky, a filmmaker with unique vision and exceptional taste."
Added Pitt, "Given my friendship and respect for Darren and the year and a half we've dedicated to working on this project, I too am disappointed. Still, I remain encouraged that 'The Fountain' will yet have its day." [...]
