CS! meldet...
The official Legendary Pictures website is listing a Diablo movie as being in development along with such projects as World of Warcraft, Clash of the Titans and the Superman Returns sequel.
The dark fantasy action-adventure game was released by Blizzard Entertainment in December of 1996. Set in the fictional Kingdom of Khanduras, Diablo has the player take control of a lone hero as he or she battles to rid the town of Tristram of the titular Lord of Terror and his demon minions.
An expansion pack, titled "Diablo: Hellfire," was released in 1997, followed by a sequel, "Diablo II," in 2000.

[18.06.2007] DiabloII.net meldet...
A couple of news posts ago we mentioned that Legendary Pictures were working on a Diablo movie which was being written by Garry Whitta. On the Legendary Pictures site, Diablo is now listed as one of the projects that is being worked on so we can safely say that the Hollywoodreporter.com article that mentioned the project was in development was correct. Good to see it confirmed and on the Legendary website finally.

[24.05.2007] DiabloII.net meldet...
Back in May of last year Blizzard announced they were teaming up with Legendary pictures to make the first Warcraft movie. No other details have come to light since then, not even on the rumour mill. But that's Warcraft and as rich as the universe is it's not Diablo and that's what you guys are really interested in. SarumanTheChef brings what could be good news then. A recent article on Hollywoodreporter.com on a movie "The Book of Eli' mentions its script writer, a Gary Whitta. At the end of the article, almost in passing it says:
"Whitta, who is writing "Diablo" for Legendary and Blizzard Entertainment, is repped by UTA, Circle of Confusion and attorney Howard Abramson."
If this isn't an error where the reporter meant Warcraft it seems the cat's out the bag. Gary Whitta certainly appears to have the credentials to create a screenplay for Diablo. You can see a list of screenplays he's worked on and is working on on his own site and he's already written for Blizzard with a Starcraft sample fiction. [...]

[01.08.2001] Go Daddy Software reserviert diablothemovie.com...

See why films named after isometric, dungeon-busting RPGs won't be the next big thing in Hollywood anytime soon.
If 'Diablo' was on your most-wanted movie list for the coming months, forget it. For the foreseeable future at the very least, Blizzard Entertainment has been granted an injunction against New Line Cinema, thus forbidding the release of any motion picture going by the same name as the acclaimed online RPG series.
Indeed, New Cinema is banned even from casually dropping the word into its advertising or promotions - it seems that alternative phrases will have to be sought for any hellfire or brimstone-like imagery. The softco behind Warcraft and StarCraft is also keen to point out that it actually holds the trademark for Diablo-titled movies itself.
We have no idea whether Blizzard has plans to expand into movie production, but who knows; if Mortal Kombat and Tomb Raider could do it, then why not Diablo? Fans of the series can begin salivating at the prospect round about... oh, you've already started.
Paul Vincent - Doesn't think open-ended films are even possible.

Blizzard Entertainment has been granted a preliminary injunction against New Line in regards to this film. But the "El" wasn't good enough, apparently, since the press release on Blizzard's site says "This ruling prohibits New Line from using the mark Diablo in any form, whether used alone or in combination with any other words."

Variety reports this week that the title has been changed ever so slightly to El Diablo from Diablo (possibly in reaction to the lawsuit from the videogame?).

[28.02.2001] Coming Attractions meldet, dass Blizzard einem "New Line"-Filmprojekt den Namen "Diablo" streitig macht...
It seems that Blizzard Entertainment, makers of the Diablo video game, aren't too pleased with New Line using "Diablo" as the title of this project. They claim that New Line picked the "Diablo" name in order to capitalize on the game franchise, and further--Blizzard has their own plans for movies based on that same game franchise. They've filed suit in U.S. District Court to get New Line to quit using the name and also for damages among other things. Inside.com points out the interesting part of the suit: it pits megamedia corporate entity Vivendi Universal (where Blizzard eventually reports up to) against AOL Time Warner (parent of New Line).
