"The Descent" (dt.

Immerhin:
Neil Marshall (u.a.

U.K. indie shingle Celador Films is reuniting with French-owned and U.K.-based Pathe on a sequel to low-budget boxoffice hit "The Descent."
The Neil Marshall horror flick claimed $57 million at the boxoffice, a sizable return on the original investment on a movie budgeted at less than $10 million.
Produced by Marshall and Christian Colson, "Descent 2" marks the directorial debut for its predecessor's editor, Jon Harris.
Based on a script by James Watkins ("My Little Eye"), the $10 million sequel will shoot more than eight weeks on location in Scotland and at London's Ealing Studios.
The stars of the original film, Shauna MacDonald and Natalie Mendoza, will reprise their roles, alongside Gavan O'Herlihy, Joshua Dallas, Anna Skellern, Douglas Hodge and Krysten Cummings.
The script sees the survivor forced back into the system of caves she battled her way out of in the first film, in a bid to locate the rest of her group.
Celador is bankrolling the project.
Pathe Distribution will release the film theatrically in the U.K., and Pathe International will handle international sales.

[31.08.2007] Fangoria zitiert Neil Marshall bzgl. "The Descent 2"...
[...] it emerged that a sequel to his hugely successful THE DESCENT is definite. "I will not be directing THE DESCENT 2," he revealed. "But I will be overseeing every aspect of the production. There's nothing to oversee yet, though, as the script is currently being written. My DESCENT editor Jon Harris will make his feature directing debut with the sequel, and I can’t think of a better man for the job." [...]

[02.08.2007] RopeOfSilicon.com sprach mit Neil Marshall, u.a. über die Endsequenz von "The Descent"...
[...] Last time out, Marshall experienced a run-in with the studio when they asked him to change his bleak ending to The Descent to a happier one. He was asked how many endings he shot this time. So far, just the one. "I don't know what they could possibly change this ending to."
I asked Marshall something I touched upon with DVD producer Charles Lazrika during the Blade Runner roundtable; whether or not he thinks directors are leaving more in the script these days to shoot and using the DVD as a fallback. "I don't think that's so much the case. You don't have time to sort of shoot extra stuff for the hell of it. But I do think that directors accept the fact that, okay the movie may be released in the cinemas in a cut version or a lesser version. But it gives us a degree of satisfaction to know that it will all be seen in some context at some point."
Yet at the same time, I said, studios use it to flip on the director. "Totally, yeah. That's exactly what happened with the ending of Descent. In return for cutting the end for the studio, what I got in return for that was a minimum 2000 screen release. I sold my soul [laughing] but I knew that everybody was going to see that version on the DVD so it wasn't going to be a big secret ... and once everyone knew I cut the end, there was going to be interest in wanting to see it. So for me it was a kind of win-win situation." [...]

[...] It was probably the scariest film I've ever seen and I hate that they went back to the well so many times to get me to jump out of my seat. The darkness, sounds and disturbing visuals repeatedly assaulted me and my delicate being. I did enjoy how unapologetic the film was for its suspension of disbelief when it came to the main characters. How many smoking hot women do you know who get off on hanging out and going spelunking? Their size 0 asses were literally the only adults on the planet who could have even squeezed into the places they decided to explore. Not one "I broke my nail" joke. Not one lesbian kiss to appease the hetero males in the crowd. I appreciate that the director bravely didn't cave (ouch) into one of these more simple plot devices. [...]

[...] The best things about this film are the super creey atmosphere that pervades everything before the descent and the pure primal horror afterwards. And nothing is better than seeing these girls start getting there own back. [...]

[09.07.2005] Bei AICN gibt es weitere Kritiken zu "The Descent"...
[...] For the horror nuts and film fans, there are numerous homages, the first glimpses of a Crawler remind you of Gollum, their rolling insect clicking sounds echo the Predator. Carrie, Aliens, you name it, they are here. Do not think of this as just a marriage of other horror films best bits- it has a true sense of originality and is great entertainment. [...]

SPOILER !!!
[...] It's a refreshingly harsh film that pulls no punches, and gives an audience who knows their horror plenty to enjoy. [...]

SPOILER !!!
[...] The Descent is released in the UK in the summer and looks to increase Neil Marshall's increasing reputation as a horror director to look out for. Set in the Appallacian mountains (shot in the UK though) its about 5 young women who go on a cave exploring adventure and come across "cannibalistic crawlers".
One of the characters suffers a great personal loss at the beginning of the film (which is excellently done) and this helps drive the narrative during the film. Now what did I like about it and why should it be picked up in the US, well - you don't see the creatures (imagine Gollum crossed with a leopard) for about 45 mins and this set up increases the suspense and helps get to know the dynamics between the women (all pretty, but not O.C. style soap wannabes)
Once the creatures appear all hell breaks loose, its very gory, sick and reminded me of Aliens, as its all clostraphobic, dark with a lot of night vision and use of flashlight. There are nods to The Shining, Carrie, Deliverance and Apocalypse Now.
The dream sequences are well done and you jump in the right places. Neil could have easily made Dog Soldiers 2, but this films works without the humour and banter you had in that film. The interplay between the women here is very convincing. [...]

[03.03.2005] UHM berichtet über Neil Marshall's "The Descent"...
Principal photography ended in February. Shooting began on location in Scotland at the end of last year and moved to Pinewood Studios in January where the majority of the action was filmed. Director Neil Marshall describes the film as "Deliverance goes underground", and adds "Many recent horror films - Dog Soldiers included - have to a certain extent parodied the genre. The Descent is going to be darker, scarier, nastier. There may be one or two nervous laughs but I basically want to scare the living daylights out of people with this film."

Pathe has made a deal with with Celador Films to sell and distribute writer-director Neil Marshall's chiller "The Descent." Pathe Pictures Intl. will handle worldwide sales, and Pathe UK will distrib pic in the United Kingdom reports Variety.
Celador Films fully financed Marshall's $6.5 million follow-up to surprise hit "Dog Soldiers." "The Descent," previously known as "The Dark," tells the story of an all-female caving expedition that goes horribly wrong. Marshall describes his horror pic, which just completed principal photography, as something akin to " 'Deliverance' goes underground".
The predominantly female cast includes rising talent Shauna Macdonald, Natalie Mendoza, Alex Reid, Saskia Mulder, Nora-Jane Noone and MyAnna Buring. "Descent" is Celador Films' third feature. It follows Oscar-nommed debut "Dirty Pretty Things" and Julian Fellowes' directorial debut "Separate Lives," which Fox Searchlight will release later this year.

"The Descent"...
[...] "[It's] about a group of people that discover a series of caverns. They kind of riddle the underworld. And that there’s an offshoot of humanity that’s been evolving down there for millions of years." The project is in limbo. "It was developed with Dreamworks. Really cool book, I'm really happy with the script, and when [former production president] Mike De Luca left DreamWorks, it kind of lost its champion, so we'll see. I’d love to do something with it at some point." [...]

[...] Said his script came in at about 200+ pages . He had to change the fate of Ike, the main character .. Actually flew out to see Jeff Long to ask him if it was ok to make Ike perform a heroic sacrifice . If you've read the book, then you may agree that the end needed a bit of a change couldn't get him to talk about the state of the project [...]

[23.07.2002] Coming Attractions hat einige ergänzenden Infos...
Whoops! It turns out that Variety slipped up and David Goyer will not be directing The Descent after all. A representative for Phantom Four Films, Goyer's production company, contacted Coming Attractions earlier today and explained that Variety erred in the article announcing the project. A retraction will run in tomorrow's issue of the trade.
Goyer is still slated to adapt the novel into a screenplay. He is also one of the film's producers, another detail left out of the Variety piece.
Today's announcement also drew a response from a CA reader familiar with the source material. Their submission helps those of us unfamiliar with the novel get a clearer picture of what we might hope to expect in the movie: "Not really a scoop, just an opinion about the Jeff Long novel. 'The Descent' is not just about the exploration of hell. With its 700 pages, the book deals with subjects like the birth of the human race, religion, myths and the power of multinational companies. Jeff Long's 'The Descent' is a very solid read until the later half where it begins to fall apart. Still, I recommend reading it because of its strong opening and some thought provoking issues."

[21.07.2002] CS! meldet...
Variety reports that DreamWorks has picked up rights to The Descent, which David Goyer will direct from his own adaptation of Jeffrey Long's novel.
Red Hour Films and Phantom Four Films are attached to produce the sci-fi thriller about a group of scientists led by a former cave explorer who must map and research a network of tunnels six miles beneath the surface. They must deal with a terrifying new species that dwells in the caves that may have been the basis for stories about hell.
Goyer previously wrote the two Blade films, The Crow: City of Angels and Dark City.
