[16.03.2012]
Deadline meldet...
After topping the box office the past two weeks with Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, Universal Pictures, Illumination Entertainment’s Chris Meledandri, and Audrey Geisel will tap the Dr. Seuss library for another classic title, and this one is a surprise. They will begin developing a 3D CG-animated feature based on The Cat in the Hat. Rob Lieber has just been set to write the script. Meledandri will produce and Geisel will be executive producer.
Aside from Green Eggs And Ham and How The Grinch Stole Christmas!, The Cat In the Hat is arguably the most famous story generated by Theodor Dr. Seuss Geisel. The surprise comes from the fact that Universal turned it into a live action film in 2003. That film grossed $101 million domestic and $133 million worldwide, it cost about $109 million to make and was considered a big disappointment. While a live action Grinch was a big hit for Universal, Meledandri and Mrs. Geisel believe that the Cat has more than one life on the big screen. It is a very popular ride in Universal’s Islands of Adventure theme park, a ride that was always based on Dr. Seuss’s original drawings. The feeling among Meledranadi, Mrs. Geisel, and Universal Films chairman Adam Fogelson and co-chairman Donna Langley is that Seuss’s works connect better in animation, prompting Universal’s decision to make this the next project.
Meledandri started the relationship with Mrs. Geisel and the estate of her husband when he ran Fox Animation and made Horton Hears A Who there. He brought over the relationship when he agreed to start a family film division for Universal. It took a couple of years to set up a studio and stable of animators, but Illumination has been a boon for Universal’s turnaround. The division has generated three films so far, none of which cost more than $70 million. Between Despicable Me, Hop and by the time Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax has completed its revenue run, the three films will likely surpass $1 billion in global box office receipts. Despicable Me has a sequel in the works, with Al Pacino voicing the villain.
Illumination is separately working on a film about the life of Dr. Seuss, with Johnny Depp attached to play him. It’s contemplated as a live action film interspersed with animation, and it will be produced by Meledandri, David Kennedy and Infinitum Nihil’s Depp and Christi Dembrowski. Mrs. Geisel will be executive producer. Keith Bunin is writing the script. [...]

[...] Producer Brian Grazer has received a draft for The Cat in the Hat Comes Back and plans to shoot the sequel in six to eight months with all the original principals. After that, Grazer said, he'd be all Seussed out, though he had secured the rights to Dr. Seuss' Oh, The Places You'll Go! That project, he says, most likely will be left in the litter box.

Safari Ben
[...] we get a series of bad musical numbers, lame set pieces, more over acting, forced plot points, and some very surreal side characters in 'Thing One' and 'Thing Two,' which I'm sure I would have enjoyed if I were on acid...or if I was an eight year old. [...]
Vomit Lad
[...] The kids are cute without being cutesy. Dakota Fanning is a good little actress. Alec Baldwin seems to have totally accepted his character actor stage of his career and just goes for it. Mrs. Travolta is fine as the Mom, but this is Myers' show, through and through. Funny funny movie.

[07.03.2003] Bei CS! gibt es ein Kommentar von Chuck the Movieguy zu den exklusiven Ausschnitten, die auf der ShoWest gezeigt wurden...
We had the first look at the trailer with an additional behind the scenes mini-featurette. First impressions.. the kids are going to steal this film. Dakota Fanning looks absolutely precious as the little girl and Spencer Breslin is.. well Spencer Breslin and a much slimmer Spencer at that. (Somebody give that boy a twinkie) Spencer is a ball of energy, a great little actor who doesn't get the credit he deserves and will probably carry this movie.
Somebody told me that the kids are practically in every scene in this film.
The props look like they are in the books and thing one and thing two look great. I especially loved the talking goldfish. It's very well done. And now that leaves Mike Myers as the Cat in the Hat.
I hated the costume. It looks out of place and from the 5-7 minutes that I saw, he didn't make me laugh. The face was okay but the body looks simply like a man in a cheap cat suit. They make a point to highlight the laugh of the Cat and I didn't even like that.

[01.11.2002] Bei EW.com gibt es ein Set-Bild von Mike Myers im Kostüm - ohne Hut !!! SF Wire sprach mit Dakota Fanning...
"We're actually out in Simi Valley [Calif.] right now, and they've built this set with 24 purple houses with blue roofs, orange chimneys and green and yellow cars. It's just amazing. My costume is a green corduroy jumper with a purple gingham top and a purple eyelet skirt."
[...] "It is so funny," she said. "It's just like the book. Obviously, there's more [in the script], because the book is short. But there is Thing One and Thing Two, and they're dressed just the same. The Cat has his red bow. There's the boy and the girl and all the houses. You know the trees that hang down? They have those in every yard. The story is just like the book, but you really get to know all the characters, get to know their personalities so much. You realize what kind of people these characters are before the [action] actually starts. Conrad is somebody who doesn't like rules. He's a free person who just does everything. Sally is a more organized person who likes to follow rules. And then The Cat comes into their lives. He tries to make Conrad follow rules a little bit more and tries to make Sally loosen up a little bit."

Film props including an eight-foot-long pair of dark blue glasses and a 200 pound golf ball have been found. [...] Police say they were in a field not far from where the film is being made in Pamona. [14.10.2002] CS! meldet...
Universal's The Cat in the Hat joins such films as Spider-Man and Batman & Robin in having goods stolen from the set.
While costumes were stolen in the latter two films, the Associated Press reports that thieves stole $55,000 worth of excessively large, custom-designed props early Friday from the movie set of the Dr. Seuss classic, starring Mike Myers.
Among the items taken were an 8-foot-long pair of dark blue glasses, a yellow 4-foot-long door key, a black 6-foot by 4-foot by 8-foot anvil with hammer, a 4-foot golf tee and a blue golf ball 7 feet in diameter that weighs more than 200 pounds. Apparently the stolen items were in a fenced lot near the set.

Baldwin will play the role of Alex Kulchak, the nosy neighbor who tries to figure out what's happening when two kids left home alone are visited by the mischievous stovetop-hatted cat played by Mike Myers.
Gilpin will play the mother of the kids. She begins taping the 10th season of "Frasier" in August, then will divide her time between the show and the movie.

[17.07.2002] AICN meldet...
[...] there was an article in the St. Petersburg Times yesterday stating that Mike Myers' film version of the Dr. Suess classic The Cat In the Hat was seriously thinking about filming in the small community of Longleaf in Pasco County, FL. The article also implied that the film's events would not be confined to the inside of the childrens' house, hence the location scouting. [...]

[25.06.2002] Die LA Times sprach mit Harald Belker, u.a. über das Car-Design in "CitH"...
As he awaits the release of "XXX", Belker and McDowell are beginning to collaborate on their next project: Dr. Seuss' "The Cat in the Hat," starring Mike Myers and directed by Bo Welch.
"In this case, the idea was to create the most stupid car you could imagine," McDowell says. "It has to look silly, awkward, nonaerodynamic. It goes against every grain in Harald's body."
Belker says he's enjoying the crooked ride.
"There's not a straight pipe in Dr. Seuss," he says. "It's very trippy and weird. That's what my world is like right now--all bent out of shape."

[17.06.2002] CountingDown zitiert einen Rollenanwärter...
I called in to my manager yesterday to see if (the casting director) called back and she said that she thinks that they casted SPENCER BRESLIN (The Kid) to play the part of Conrad (Dakota Fanning's big brother).

[10.06.2002] Coming Attractions meldet...
"Due to creative differences, literally, Rick Baker will not be creating the makeup effects for Mike Myers as the Cat... Between the two of them, as well as Bo Welch and Brian Grazer, a satisfactory 'look' could not be agreed on, so Mr. Baker elected to walk away and the project is now out to several other effects shops, who have a few weeks to submit their concepts for the title character. And Things 1 and 2, of course."

[11.06.2002] Coming Attractions meldet, dass Dakota Fanning (u.a. "I Am Sam") die Rolle der Sally spielt...

[07.03.2002] Blickpunkt:Film meldet...
