[02.03.2009] AICN berichtet über die WonderCon-Präsentation...
[...] The panel consisted of Elijah Wood, voice of the titular 9 character along with an animator whose name I wasn't able to pick up. They started off with the trailer that is available online and then went into some background about director Shane Ackers original short film in his time in film school and how it was noticed by Tim Burton and got off the ground to become a full-length film. They then took several questions from the crowd and then showed another clip, a couple minute scene depicting a battle of the rag-doll characters battling some type of bizzare flying creature/machine. We got to hear the character voices from most of the main cast (I believe Wood, Christopher Plummer, John C. Reilly and Jennifer Connelly were all featured in the scene). It was an action packed clip well put together, and I'm just loving the general look and atmosphere of the film. There was also a nice inclusion of humor at the end of a big action scene which shows a hint of some levity put into a post-apocalyptic world. Following a question I asked about what draws such a great cast to an animated film, Wood talked about how much he likes animation in general as well the look of this specific film. He said that a lot of the animation out there is "talking lions and zoo animals" and loved the fact that this was something new and dark and different. Both panel guests said it will be a dark film, but "with hope." The non-Elijah panel member spoke highly of the cast, which truth be told is really solid. This looks like something that might have trouble in the beginning but could pick up a pretty big following in the end. [...]

[27.11.2008] MTV sprach mit Elijah Wood...
"I’m actually just finishing work on an animated film called ‘9,’" Wood told us when we caught up with him at Alicia Keys’ Black Ball. "It’s based on a short film Shane Acker did a number of years ago. It’s a beautiful short."
Tim Burton is producing the full-length feature from Acker, one of the WETA Digital animators on "Return of the King," and Crispin Glover, Jennifer Connelly, John C. Reilly, Martin Landau, and Christopher Plummer are among the other voice actors. Wood plays 9, one of nine mechanized rag dolls, "who kind of have the soul of humanity in them," he said. "It’s basically about a post-apocalyptic world where machines created by man have destroyed mankind, and these nine ragdolls go about trying to find out what has happened and what these machines are about."
In the worldless short film version, two of the ragdolls - 9 and 5 - are scavenging for items when they encounter and must fight one of the ramshackle machine monsters, whose head is a skull, limbs are metal, and torso made out of the burlap hide of ragdolls it’s already killed.
The feature-length version will have more characters, as developed by "Corpse Bride" writer Pamela Pettler, and more beasts, to enrich the world that 9 took place in, so that you can see how this world came to be, how the ragdolls fit in, what the beasts are that hunt them, and what happened to the humans. "It’s so uplifting!" Wood laughed.
The ten-and-a-half short took four years to make, but the feature length will be out by next year, Wood said. And the experience of doing another animated character has left him hungry for more.
"It’s a totally different kind of experience," he said. "You don’t really rely on the physical. It’s loose. And it’s fun to just create a voice and work on a character that way. It’s a different kind of creative process. It’s fun."

An all-star cast will provide voices for the main characters in Academy Award nominee Shane Acker's animated epic 9, which is currently in production for Focus Features. Focus CEO James Schamus made the announcement today.
Elijah Wood ("The Lord of the Rings" trilogy) will voice the title role of 9. Joining him are Academy Award winner Jennifer Connelly (upcoming Reservation Road), actor/filmmaker Crispin Glover, Academy Award winner Martin Landau (Ed Wood), two-time Tony Award winner Christopher Plummer, and John C. Reilly.
Scripted by Pamela Pettler, 9 is being produced by Tim Burton, Timur Bekmambetov, and Jim Lemley. Focus creative executive David Gerson is overseeing the project for president of production John Lyons. Focus is financing 9 and holds worldwide rights to the movie.
9 is a feature-length expansion of Mr. Acker's short film of the same name. The action-packed tale takes place in a world parallel to our own, in which the very legacy of humanity is threatened. A community of fully mobile rag dolls living a post-apocalyptic existence find one of their own, 9 (Wood), displaying leadership qualities that may help them to survive. The conflicted but resilient community includes 1 (Plummer), a domineering war veteran; 2 (MLandau), an aged inventor; 5 (Reilly), a stalwart mechanic; 6 (Glover), a visionary and artist; and 7 (Connelly), a brave warrior.
Schamus said, "This exciting and thought-provoking story has already drawn a strong filmmaking team together to work with Shane in bringing his visionary fantasy world to life. These splendid actors will provide compelling characterizations to go with the visual brilliance."

Shane Acker's short film "9" took him over 4 years to make, but the results are certainly worth it. It's very ambitious, and I'm impressed he was able to finish it, especially considering that during that time, he worked on Lord of the Rings, animating Mumakils, among other things. He describes the experience as animation boot camp.
Judging from the fluidity and high entertainment value inherent in his work, boot camp seems to have paid off. However, I suspect he had a lot on the ball to begin with. After all, not everyone is good enough to get in the door at WETA.
The film really shines in the details. A wall of windows in a broken down warehouse that forms the background of one scene is not just a grid of black and white, but rather a festival of grime and assymmetry. A board that plays a pivotal role in one scene is textured so well you'd swear it was a real piece of wood composited over the scene.
"9" is textural, spiritual, and haunting, a real delight to watch. It is also a delight to listen to, as sound designer Dave Steinwedel's subtle bits of foley brought the well animated, designed, and rendered shots to life, while Earganic's score amplified the emotional core of every scene.
The film is making its rounds in the Festival Circuit, and sweeping up a few awards along the way. [...]
